West Senior Football League Round 1:
St. Kieran’s 1.4 Fr. Casey’s 1.9
The 2024 season got underway on Saturday afternoon along the banks of the Feale as our senior footballers made the journey to take on Fr. Casey’s in the opening round of the West League. Fielding a youthful side we played against a stiff breeze in the opening half which made threatening the opposition goals extremely challenging. While we were shorn several first team regulars the home side fielded an experienced side containing many of their side who contested the County Semi-final in 2023. We found it difficult to create scoring challenges in the opening half as the home side pinned us into our own half and capitalized on the strong breeze at their backs to lead at the interval eight points to win with our solitary score coming from Alan Daly. Casey’s began the second half the brighter and soon increased their tally to eight points before we found our feet. Now playing with the assistance of the breeze there was a noticeable boost in confidence as we began to show greater composure in possession of the ball and put together some encouraging passages of play. Further points from Alan Daly reduced our deficit before Daly showed a predators instinct to find the back of the Casey’s net with ten minutes remaining. As we pushed hard for the decisive score to take the spoils the home side capitalised on a turnover of possession to work the ball into our half and find the back of the net to put five points between the two sides at the final whistle. Despite the loss there were plenty of positives to take from the game as we build towards the County Championship in July. It was great to see six minor players get their first taste of Senior football with Sean Long, Oisin Ryan, Oisin Commane, Ben Cussen, Jack O’ Sullivan and Luke Corrigan all taking to the field of play throughout the hour and putting in promising performances. Next up this Saturday afternoon we welcome County Champions Newcastlewest to Coolcappagh for round 2. Saturday’s game throws in at 3pm.
