BALLYBROWN
Well done to Alex Smith, Mark Sheehan & Timmy McCormack playing for Limerick U14s last Saturday in Thurles, against Clare and Tipperary.
Many thanks to Cllr Dan McSweeney who helped secure €1,000 for Ballybrown GAA Club from the Community Initiative Scheme 2022.
It is with great sadness that we as a club and community learnt of the passing of a great Ballybrown man, Tom O’ Brien who lived in Clarina village for many years before moving back to a family residence in Kildimo in more recent times. Our sympathies go to his wife Siobhan and other relatives and a wide circle of friends. Tom was Chairman of Ballybrown GAA Club for 3 years, from 1971 to 1973. He was also Vice Chairman for a couple of years after that. This was an important time for our club. Club became Senior in 1967. 1968 under the guidance of Fr. Kelly saw our underage club formed for under 12 to under 16. Club won a city Minor in 1971. Won another City Junior in 1972 and lost the county final to Kilteely Dromkeen with our second fifteen. 1973 saw our U14 team win Division 3 of the All Ireland Feile which was held in Limerick that year. A magnificent achievement. In 1972 Ballybrown GAA unveiled plans for a new clubhouse. While the structure was not built, it led to the Pre fab structure arriving on site. This was used for the best part of 15 years until our current clubhouse was opened in 1987. Tom O Brien was involved and even spread the stones with a shovel, pending the arrival of the delivery truck. Tom was always a very proud Ballybrown man. In more recent years, Tom and Siobhan were part of the Ballybrown Church choir. Tom was a fine singer and had a very elegant dress sense. A very holy and devout man and very respectful to all he met. A lot of the current generation of Ballybrown people would not have known Tom O’ Brien, but our way of life now is greatly influenced by Tom and the people around him at the time. He will not be forgotten by those who knew him. On behalf of the current generation of Ballybrown people, I would like to say, thank you Tom O` Brien – Mick Roberts. Ar dheis de go raibh a ainm.
