Monaleen GAA Club Notes
LIAM MacCARTHY CUP VISIT: Monaleen GAA Club were proud to welcome Liam MacCarthy to the Club on a bright sunny October Bank Holiday Weekend, and to honour our own clubmen – players and mentors both, who were part of the winning team – Andrew La Touche Cosgrave, Lorcan Lyons, Brian Geary and Paul Kinnerk. We also welcomed three team members of the All Ireland winning Limerick Ladies Junior Football team – Ciara Ryan, Niamh Ryan and Mairead Kavanagh – it was wonderful to have two All Ireland trophies in the club. Presentations were made to Andy, Lorcan, Paul and Brian by our Club Chairperson, Caroline O’Kane, who paid special thanks to the organising committee for the huge efforts they put in to hosting the event. Caroline also made a special mention of Christy Murphy, Leo Morrison and Noel Moynihan – three founding Club Members and strong Limerick supporters, who are no longer with us and who would have enjoyed the celebrations immensely.
Also there to lift the trophy was Bob McConkey, nephew of the first Limerick man to lift the Liam McCarty – his own namesake – Bob McConkey. Bob brought with him two All Ireland medals from 1918 and 1921 which his uncle had won. It was a wonderful sight to see so many families there to honour the lads and the celebrations continued late into the afternoon – who knows there may be many more years of celebrations to come!
U-21 FOOTBALL: Our U-21 footballers made an excellent start to the County U21 Premier football championship when beating holders Adare 7-08 to 2-01 in Clarina on Saturday last. We are due to face Rathkeale in Adare in the second round of the championship this Saturday, November 3, at 2pm. Best of luck to the players and management team. All support welcome. We are due to face Oola in Round 3 of the championship on Saturday, November 10, while Ballysteen provide the opposition in Round 4 on November 17.
DISCO: Monaleen GAA Club’s Mega Disco, with proceeds in aid of the club’s lighting project, took place at the Lodge Nite Club at the Kilmurry Lodge Hotel on Saturday last. All money raised from the event is going towards paying for our new wall and pitch lights. It proved to be a very enjoyable night. Thanks to everyone for their support.
