KNOCKADERRY GAA CLUB NOTES

AHALIN NS COMPLETE HISTORIC DOUBLE

Ahalin NS captured both the boy’s and girl’s Division 1 trophies on the one day, last Thursday in Mick Neville Park. This was a brilliant achievement for the boys and girls involved, who displayed courage, determination and no little skill on the day. First up were the girls, who were pitted against a talented Broadford side. Played on a wide open pitch, the game tested the fitness of both teams. Ahalin girls were on top in the first half but only lead by 0-4 to 0-2 at the break. Broadford brought the difference back to a point early in the second half but, despite playing against the breeze, a brilliant effort by all the girls broke the resistance of their opponent’s aided by two goals from Órnagh to leave the final score at 2-6 to 0-3. Ruby proudly lifted the Div. 1 shield, the first captain to bring this trophy back Ahalin. Nicole was on her toes in goals, Holly, Jorgia and Kayleigh were rock solid at the back. Ruby and Órnagh drove the team forward from the middle while Ella-Mae, Tara, Lily and Karleigh were dangerous forwards.

Panel: N. Dunworth; J. Van Mechelen, K. Meehan, H. Breen, O. Barrett, R. Molloy, E. Hartnett, T. Moran, L. Faughnan, L Hartnett, M. Tierney; A. Corkery, S. O’Regan, A. Doherty, L. O’Donnell, H. Kiely, K. Clarke, C. O’Connor

Next up were the boys, who faced an Adare Boys School team they drew with earlier this month. Another thrilling game ensued. Ahalin raced out of the blocks and largely controlled the first half. Daniel was deadly accurate with his frees and Jack scored a goal to leave Ahalin up 1-4 to 0-0 at half-time. Adare came back strongly in the second half, scoring an early goal. Cillian struck back immediately with a brilliant strike and this was to prove the winner. A brave Adare side battled back to within a point but heroic defending by the outstanding Ronan and his five other backs along with two brilliant saves from Andy kept Ahalin’s nose just in front and they came out on top on a score of 2-4-to 2-3. Having won the tough girl’s final less than hour earlier, Órnagh and Ruby summoned up the strength to play with the boys in the second half and were key to Ahalin’s success. Daniel lifted the Sonny Crowley Cup for the first time amidst much jubilation from supporters, parents and teachers on a memorable day for the school and the parish.
