Galbally GAA Club Notes
All roads led to Fermoy on Saturday last for the Munster Club Intermediate Championship against the home side Fermoy. Entering the Munster Club Championship is unchartered territory and involves playing the best that another county has to offer, and therefore you need your best players available. Unfortunately this was not to be as James Ryan and Ger Quinlan were unavailable for selection due to injury. James Ryan went toe-to-toe with Kerry in the 2010 Munster Final in Killarney, and had he been from Kerry, he may well have been a multiple football all-star at this stage. He was man of the match in the Munster Senior Hurling Final in 2013 when John Kiely was a selector with John Allen, and is a man for the big occasion, and has a proven big game temperament. His calming influence on the field and his composure in certain situations meant that he was an incalculable loss. It was the first championship defeat tasted by Galbally since the Galtee Gaels game back in April and it is noteworthy that James Ryan was also absent for that game.
Ger Quinlan has become a key forward for Galbally this year, getting a number of scores from play. He carried an injury into the County Semi Final against Pallasgreen which necessitated his early withdrawal in that game, and intensive rehabilitation enabled him to get through the County Final, but he was unable to field on Saturday. To their credit, Fermoy were a formidable outfit and would have probably been too strong without the injured players, and we wish to congratulate them on their 4-9 to 0-6 victory and wish them well in the next game in the competition. As for Galbally, we will enjoy the winter break, and regroup ahead of Senior Football in 2019. Inspirational Captain Tom Davern will always be remembered for lifting the County Championship and 2018 has been a fantastic year.
Team: Ger Ryan, Tom Davern (Capt), Tony Henebry, Frank Cussen, Mark Quinlan, Liam Casey, Eoin Halligan, Dave Cussen, John Kearns, Mike Donovan (0-2), James Cummins (0-2), Jamie Morrissey, Jacko Mullane, Kieran Hickey, Gary McCarthy. Subs: Nathan O’Byrne for Mullane, Jack Donovan (0-1) for Gary McCarthy, Cathal Shanahan (0-1) for John Kearns, Michael O’Dwyer for Frank Cussen, Jonathan Scully for Mike Donovan, Roibeard Donovan for Quinlan.
