Croom GAA Club Notes
he official opening of our new clubhouse and training area development takes place this Saturday November 3rd from 1.30pm. We will welcome representatives from the Munster Council, the County Board, and local politicians who all helped us get the project off the ground and bring it to fruition. The McCarthy Cup will be present and available for photos. Everyone from Croom and anyone connected to the club or parish is invited and welcome to attend. We would like to take this opportunity to invite anyone who hasn’t been involved in the GAA club before, or is newly moved to the locality, to come along and enjoy the day. We will have music and refreshments and matches involving our U6 and U8 players on our new all weather area.
Intermediate Hurling County Final:
Last Saturday we played Dromin/Athlacca in the County Final in the Gaelic Grounds in the curtain raiser to the Senior Final. We started the game with the aid of the slight breeze and the sun at our backs. We had a couple of goal chances early on with Mark Reidy baring down on goals but he was hauled down, with the resulting free put over the bar. Conor Laffan broke through but was hooked as he went to apply the finish. We would rue those misses later on. Dromin/Athlacca were dominating our puck outs and the breaks, and their scores were coming easier, although our backs did very well to repel numerous attacks. They scored a goal mid way through the half and that gave them breathing space right through. We went in at the break 1.08 to 0.07 behind. We started brighter in the second half but it was very stop start, with the referree very picky, blowing for frees every couple of minutes and stopping the goalkeepers pucking out the ball quickly. Nevertheless, it was nip tuck but we were reeling in Dromin/Athlacca until with 10 minutes to go, a coming together of players on our 21 ended up with a harsh straight red card for our full back Mark O’Riordan who was playing a stormer. It didn’t stop Croom and we continued with our momentum getting it back to 2 points on 55 minutes, when another rush of blood to the head and a strike off the ball causing us to lose another man to a straight red. This made our task near impossible. We fought on but Dromin/Athlacca got another goal which ended our chance. We fought on bravely dropping balls in around the sqaure, winning a 21 yard free but it was saved and we couldn’t finish the rebound. It finished 2.15 to 0.14. Congratulations to Dromin/Athlacca and hard luck to our lads who gave it everything. Thank you to all the players who have trained since January for this. Thank you to manager Johnny Cahill, selector Patsy Cahill, coach Tom Carmody, our backroom team and all who helped out. Special thanks to all our supporters and businesses in the town who painted the town, and the faces of the kids, blue and white this week. We will look to build on this year, develop and blood a few more players next year and hopefully go one better in 2019. Croom Abu!
Our U8 and U10 hurlers played Dromin/Athlacca/Banogue in a challenge game at half time in the Gaelic Grounds in what was their first taste of action in the Galeic Grounds. They enjoyed it immensely even though they nearly froze with the cold! Thanks to all those who helped organise and look after them on the day. The U8s and U10s will play exhibition mathces this Saturday at our Offical Opening. We look forward to seeing you there.
U13 Football Final:
Our U13 footballers lost to Claughaun last week in the 13 a side final in South Liberties on a scoreline of 4.07 to 1.05.
Croom are due to play Bruff this Friday and Ballylanders the following Friday, both in Knocklong. See our club Facebook page to confirm fixture details.
