Ballylanders GAA Club Notes
SENIORS BACK IN COUNTY FINAL
Our senior footballers will contest this years Limerick senior football final again after a four year absence after they defeated Newcastle West last Saturday evening in Mick Neville Park Rathkeale.
If a quick start is what manager Mike Fox looked for he certainly got it as the game was only twenty seconds old when Eoin Walsh crashed the ball to the back of the net which was quickly followed by a Steve Fox point. We dominated the opening quarter of the game & Jimmy Barry tapped over a free to stretch the lead to five.In the ninth minute a great team move ended with Eoin O’Mahony firing past the keeper again for our second goal & he followed this up with a point to leave the score 2-03 to no score after twelve minutes. The West Limerick side made some changes & these worked for them & they took control for the next 10 minutes scoring 1-05 to cut the gap to one but a long range free from Eoin O’Mahony ensured we went in at the break two to the good,2-04 to 1-05.
The second half was a titanic battle with both sides giving their all to reach the final & by the fifth minute NCW had the game all square,a Jimmy Barry free two minutes later nudged us ahead again but once again the west side responded to level the game by the eleventh minute which turned out to be their final score of the game, both sides were wasteful in front of goal for the next ten minutes but with the prize that was on offer this was understandable.Eoin O’Mahony,Brian O’Connell & Danny Frewen’s pace was causing NCW problems & it was a great relief to our defenders to see Eoin Walsh & Steve Fox holding up possession & create opportunities & with six minutes remaining Brian O’Connell popped up to put us ahead & heading into injury time sub Keairn O’Callaghan found the target from a free on the right wing. The tension was unbearable for the remaining minutes as NCW threw everything at our defense but Steve Walsh,Jason Leigh,Moss Kelly & Eoin Martin were not for moving & the final whistle was greeted with great cheer & relief.Declan O’Connor was immense in goal & made some big saves when NCW had their purple patch, the full back line of Moss Kelly,Eoin Martin & Jason Leigh didn’t put a foot wrong & were comfortable working the ball out to the half back line of Tom O’Dywer,Steve Walsh & Brian O’Connell. At midfield Liam Martin & Mark O’Connell worked tirelessly & won some vital kick outs near the end,the half forward line of Danny Frewen,Ciaran Kelly & Eoin O’Mahony’s pace will always keep defenders on the back foot & O’Mahony’s height & strength was a great outlet for Declan’s kick outs. The full forward line of Jimmy Barry Murphy,Eoin Walsh & Steve Fox held the ball up brilliantly & got vital scores during the game.Keairn O’Callaghan delivered a massive free when he was introduced late on to secure the victory.Next up in the final is the current champions Adare so Mike Fox & his backroom team will have to keep the lads in top form if they are to bring the Fr Casey cup back to the foothills of the Galtee’s for the winter again.Team & scorers;Declan O’Connor,Mossy Kelly,Eoin Martin,Jason Leigh,Brian O’Connell (0-1),Steve Walsh,Tom O’Dywer,Liam Martin,Mark O’Connell,Eoin O’Mahony (1-02,0-1 free),Ciaran Kelly,Danny Frewen,Jimmy Barry Murphy (0-2 frees),Eoin Walsh (1-0),Steve Fox (0-1).Subs used Keairn O’Callaghan (0–1).
