Ballylanders GAA Club Notes

Jimmy Barry Murphy was the hero in Kilmallock last Saturday evening as his late late goal secured our place in this years county semifinals & set up a meeting with Newcastle West.
This was a game that definitely had everything, goals,a red card & late drama. We started off the game with some exciting forward play & straight from the throw in Eoin O’Mahony went on a solo run to tap over the opening score which was quickly followed by Danny Frewen’s first of the game.Next it was the turn of half back Tom O’Dywer to brilliantly fire over with the outside of his right booth from out on the right wing to put us three up with three minutes on the clock & midfielder Mark O’Connell made that four when he found the target two minutes later before Ballysteen stopped the momentum briefly with there first of the game before another from Danny Frewen was followed by a Jimmy Barry free & then Brian O’Connell added our seventh inside the opening twelve minutes. The next ten minutes belonged to Ballysteen as they hit three in a row to cut the gap but once again a quick counter attack ended with Danny firing the ball into the Ballysteen net to put six between the sides, this soon became eight as another from Danny was followed by two from Ciaran Kelly in between a Ballysteen score. But then with only three minutes of the half to go we suffered a blow as Brian O’Connell was shown a black card as he conceded a penalty which they rifled into the roof of the net to give Declan in goal no chance & they followed up with the final score of the half to leave the score at the break 1-10 to 1-6 in our favor.Once again it was Bally who started the half better & free each from Ciaran & Jimmy Barry was followed by four from play from Danny (2),Eoin Walsh & Eoin O’Mahony to put 10 between the sides.Ballysteen got their first point of the half after sixteen minutes but then the real drama happened as Danny was giving his marching orders with twelve minutes remaining & this unsettling us & Ballysteen were to score 3-01 without reply to put them ahead with time running out but once again the lads responded brilliantly & worked the ball up to Eoin Walsh who took a quick free to set Jimmy Barry through on goal & he cooly slotted the ball under the keeper & into the net to win us the game in the most dramatic of circumstances & set up a county semifinal vs Newcastle West next weekend. This was an impressive performance from the team who were already without the injured Shane Fox & the loss of Brian & Danny at key stages meant the rest of the guys really had to step up & be counted which they did.An impressive 2-12 of the 2-16 came from play with Danny Frewen kicking 1-05 all from play.Team & scorers;Declan O’Connor,Jason Leigh,Mossy Kelly,Eoin Martin,Brian O’Connell (0-1),Steve Walsh,Tom O’Dywer (0-1),Mark O’Connell (0-1),Liam Martin,Danny Frewen (1-5),Ciaran Kelly (0-3,0-2 frees),Eoin O’Mahony (0-2),Jimmy Barry Murphy (1-2,0-2 frees),Eoin Walsh (0-1),Steve Fox.Subs used Micheál O’Rourke,James Kirby & Kieran O’Callaghan.Well done to Mike Fox & his management team for having the team in top shape & we wish them the best of luck for next weekend where we aim to be back in the final since 2014.
