Ahane GAA Club Notes
Ahane Senior Hurlers
We played South Liberties in the 4th Round of the group stages on Sunday last in Cappamore. With both sides going into the game with two wins and a single loss, the result would go a long was to deciding how the top of the group finished up. South Liberties played with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and while Willie Shanahan opened the scoring for Ahane with a fine point, Souths finished the half the stronger, knocking over 5 scores in succession in the latter stages to go in 11 points to 6 at the break. Ahane’s main scoring threat was Tom Morrissey who knocked over some fine frees in difficult conditions. The second half started with a productive spell of play from Ahane, who quickly narrowed to lead to a point with fine scores from Tom, Mike Carr and veteran Niall Moran. A Tom Morrissey free with 5 minutes to go in normal time edged Ahane ahead for the first time on the day, 0-14 to 0-13. Just when things were looking bright, South Liberties struck with an equalising point which was soon followed by a well worked goal, having carved open the Ahane defence. A couple of more points were traded before the ref called time and Ahane’s championship aspirations for 2018 were over, with the final score Ahane 0-15 South Liberties 1-15. Hard luck to the lads who fought hard throughout. They will now contest the county cup completion however next up are neighbours Monaleen in the last round of the group stages.
Atháin v Saor Theas
Drochlá d’Atháin Dé Domhnaigh sa Cheapach Mhór nuair a bhuaigh Saor Theas orthu agus anois tá a rás rite acu sa chraobh don bhliain 2018. Bhí gaoth láidir ann mar chabhair ag Saor Theas sa chéad leath agus cé go raibh an cluiche
cothrom go leor fuair Saor Theas cúilíní roimh leath ama a chuir siad sé chúilín chun tosaigh ag leath ama. Sa dara leath thosaigh Atháin go láidir agus níorbh fhada go raibh siad ar chomhscór. Bhí siad cúilín chun tosaigh agus deich
nóiméad fágtha ach chríochnaigh Saor Theas go tréan agus fuair siad an cúl tábhachtach go déanach sa chluiche.
Atháin 0-15 Saor Theas 1-15.
Ahane U9 and U10 Hurlers : Trip to Ballina GAA
The Ahane U9 and U10 hurlers took part in the 15th Annual John Joe Nevin Hurling Tournament on Sunday 02nd September which was superbly hosted by Ballina GAA Juvenile Club. The tournament started in 2004 and each year it continues to grow in strength and is a celebration of underage hurling where all games will be sporting, the competition will be great and whatever the result, the winner will be hurling and all the players taking part will enjoy a fantastic day out.
The U9 players from Ahane enjoyed great games against Newport, Clonlara and Monaleen with the U10 squad playing Clonlara, Newport and Killaloe. After 3 sporting games for each of the squads, the players thoroughly enjoyed the warm hospitality and refreshments provided by Ballina GAA in the clubhouse at the end of the tournament. Congratulations and thank you to Ballina GAA for hosting a wonderful tournament for the young Ahane players. The pitches were in excellent condition and the day was very expertly run with Ballina GAA providing a professional match day programme where player’s names from all teams were listed along with the Chairman’s welcome, schedule of games, past winners and players of the tournaments, photos of previous captains along with the background to the Des Nevin Cup. Comhghairdeas to Ballina GAA and thank you to all parents and supporters who travelled to Ballina to cheer on the Ahane boys.
