Ahane GAA Club Notes
Ahane Seniors hurlers
The lads had a busy week with two all-county league games. We travelled to Kilmallock on Tuesday and came away with a good win on a score of 2-14 to 0-14 points. They welcomed county champions Na Piarsaigh to Newgarden on Saturday and played out a pulsating draw, with the game finishing up 1-18 apiece. Both games showed some lovely crisp hurling at times, culminating in some great team scores. Well done lads.
Ahane Junior Hurlers
We played Ballybricken in a re-fixed East championship game, with the original fixture having to be called off at half time due to a thunder storm. No such issues on this occasion, with potential heat exhaustion being the only enemy given the evening heat in Cappamore.
Ahane, while again down a few key players, played some good hurling throughout. While the game remained close throughout, the Bally boys pulled away in the end winning out by 1-22 to 2-14.
Limerick Minor Hurlers
The U17s, including Ahane’s Padraig Harnett and Andrew Shanahan, contested the Munster hurling final in Thurles on Sunday last against a Tipperary side they had beaten earlier in the Championship. In reality, Tipperary were the stronger team on the day, winning out by 1-20 to 1-12 in the end.
Unfortunately the lads were slow to start and always were chasing the game. Well done to Padraig who hurled heroically in defence, and to Andrew who made his debut with the lads. The minors now play a round-robin against Galway (next Sunday) and Kilkenny two weeks later. The top two will qualify for the All-Ireland semi-finals where Dublin and Tipperary will await.
Cul Camp 2018 (9-13th July
Ahane GAA Cul Camp 2018 is on from the 9th – 13th of July : After the record numbers who attended last year’s Cul Camp in Mackey Park, we are looking forward to seeing an even bigger turnout this year. We are looking for parents to give a hand if possible during the week with traffic, lunch support, etc. If you can give a half an hour of your time during the week, pls contact Gina on 0872204600. Thanks in advance. Ahane abú.
Feile Football Trip top Ferbane
The U13/14 Footballers travelled to Ferbane GAA, Co. Offaly on Saturday to take part in the Regional Football Feile day. The players gathered in Mackey Park just after 9am to travel via bus to Ferbane GAA. The team travelled in anticipation of a great day of football and craic and were not disappointed with a fantastic trip had by all players, mentors and supporters. With many of the group missing due to holidays and other commitments, the 16 Ahane players who travelled on the day gave it their all in sweltering heat over the course of two challenging and highly competitive games against Castleknock of Dublin and St. Joseph’s of Laois and were a credit to Ahane GAA with their efforts in both games to the very end over the course of back to back games. A massive thank you to Ferbane GAA who hosted a fantastic day for the players and who ensured everything ran smoothly and professionally – in addition hot food was provided to all after the games. The Ahane players (and all 5 mentors!!) made a welcome stop in Banagher enroute back to enjoy a cool dip in an outdoor pool on the Shannon river. There was a big effort to get all the players and mentors out of the water and back on the bus!! The team arrived back in Mackey Park at 5.30pm after a truly enjoyable day. A big thank you to the supporters who travelled to Ferbane GAA to cheer on the players – well done to the team on the day – Colm S-W, Mark M, Stephen H, Kyle F, Craig O’C, Ciaran C, Dylan O’C, Ruairi C, Sean O’N, Jack B, Danny S, John D, David C, Adam O’C, Ryan O’K and Will McC.
Bord na nÓg Bag Packing Fundraiser
Ahane GAA Bord na nÓg would like to acknowledge the fantastic support from all those who gave of their time last weekend at the Annual Fundraiser ensuring we had at least 8 parents from each age group volunteering for 80mins each in Dunnes Stores over the course of the day from 10am to 6pm. Despite the very hot and sunny weather, there was plenty of hard work and chat from the Ahane clad team in support of the club on the day. A big THANK YOU to all those who shopped in Dunnes Stores on Childers Road last Saturday and who gave so generously to the Ahane GAA fundraiser – €1,284 was raised for the benefit of the Bord na nÓg group of players. Bord na nÓg Chairman – Martin McCormack – would like to record a special thanks to Dunnes Stores management and staff for your very warm welcome and friendly support to our fundraising team over the day.
U12 Long Puck – Limerick County Champion
Well done and a huge congratulations to our U12 Hurler – John O’Connor – who won the Limerick County Community Games Long Puck competition last weekend which was held at Mungret GAA. John is a key member of the Ahane U12 squad and he superbly turned on the style in the competition to shoot and reach a puck of 72 metres with the sliotar. His parents Linda and Brendan and indeed all of the U12 squad and members of Ahane Bord na nOg were thrilled with the fantastic achievement from one of our skilled and very popular hurlers. John will represent Limerick in the National Poc Fada competition during August. All the very best in the National Competition John from all in Ahane GAA Club – Ahane abu!!!!
