County Intermediate Hurling Championship Round 5:
St. Kierans 2.13 South Liberties 1.19
St. Patricks GAA grounds in Rhebogue provided the venue on Thursday evening as the intermediate hurlers concluded the group phase of the County Championship. We came into the game off the back of an encouraging draw against fellow west Limerick side Feohanagh in round 4 but having suffered three defeats in our opening three games we needed a win over the east Limerick side if we were to avoid the dreaded relegation play-off this season. Our opponents also needed a win to avoid a second successive relegation having dropped down from the premier intermediate ranks last season and had only recorded one win from their previous four games against rivals Pallasgreen in round 3. Fielding a youthful side we began the game brightly with the frees of Cormac Thompson keep us intact. The opening goal of the game occurred midway through the opening half as Cathal McEnery linked up with full forward Conor McMahon who dispatched the ball into the back of the net to give us the lead for the first time. Despite this South Liberties would rally before the interval and enjoyed a one point lead at the break, 0.12 to 1.8 with further scores coming from Jack Sullivan, Cathal McEnery and Cillian Ambrose. The game was played a good pace with both sides trying to work the ball through the lines. Liberties would increase their lead to two points early on and from here we found it hard to get back on level terms. With the final whistle approaching we trailed by a goal and pushed hard for a leveller but it was the eastern side who ultimately found the back of the net for what would be the decisive score of the game to stretch their advantage to six points with the whistle on the horizon. We were awarded a penalty late on which Gavin Thompson excellently slotted into the net to leave three points between the sodes at the final whistle. As a result we now face the prospect of a relegation play-off this weekend against Hospital/Herbertstown who finished bottom of their group like ourselves with four losses and one draw from their five championship games to date. The relegation playoff takes place this Saturday afternoon in Mungret at 2pm. Team v South Liberties Cillian Ambrose, Cillian Meade, Brendan McCarthy, Aaron Heffernan, Sean Long, Diarmuid Mulcahy, Eoghan Sheehan, Gavin Thompson, Fionn Gleeson, Darragh McMahon, Cathal McEnery, Jack O’ Sullivan, Darragh Mullane, Conor McMahon, Shane O’ Mahony, Mossie Shine, Conor Woulfe, Luke Mulcahy.
