St. Kierans GAA Club Notes:

All County Hurling League Division 4 Round 1:
St. Kieran’s 2.16 Feenagh / Kilmeedy 2.21
The intermediate hurlers began their County League campaign on Sunday when they travelled to take on the home side in Division 4. Fielding a youthful side with three debutants in the starting 15 and one amongst the substitutes we got off to a slow start as the home side found the back of the net inside the opening moments of the game. We could well have been two goals down but for the side netting coming to our rescue. Despite our slow start we worked our way into the game with scores from Jack O’ Sullivan and Gavin Thompson reducing our deficit. We got our first goal of the game midway through the opening half as centre forward Jack O’ Sullivan pierced through the Feenagh defence. Having caught the ball twice in the build-up he skilfully struck off the hurley past the helpless Feenagh Kepper. We led at the interval thanks to a well finished effort by corner forward Shane O’ Mahony to make the scoreline 2.7 to 1.9. The home side upped the ante in the second period and punished indiscretions on our behalf. Jack O’ Sullivan continued his scoring form from the first period to keep us in the game despite the strong second half from the home side. At the final whistle Feenagh took the win in what was an encouraging first outing of the season in a game where we fielded a very youthful and inexperienced side shorn of the services of several first team regulars from the 2025. Most encouragingly the new players introduced to the team adapted extremely well to the physical and mental rigours of this level. Next up in round 2 this Saturday we welcome south Limerick side Hospital / Herbertstown to Ardagh in round 2. Team v Feenagh/Kilmeedy, Jonathan Ruttle, Shay Greaney, Aaron Heffernan, David O’ Connell, Derry O’ Connor, Diarmuid Mulcahy, Conor Woulfe (0.1), Cathal McEnery (0.1), Fionn Gleeson, Conor McMahon, Gavin Thompson (0.2), Jack O’ Sullivan (1.11), Shane O’ Mahony (1.0), Donie Nolan (0.1), Cathal O’ Connor, Luke Mulcahy, Jack Dowling, Con Enright.

All County Football League Division 6 – Round 1:
The Junior footballers opened their division 6 campaign against Athea on Saturday afternoon in Athea.
Fielding a very youthful side, St. Kieran’s gave valuable experience to the next generation with eight members of the u20 County Championship winning side starting and four minor players making their adult debuts throughout the hour. The young side showed plenty of determination throughout and will take many positives from the performance.
The first half was a tightly contested affair with both sides exchanging points. Up front scores came from Anthony Molyneaux, Oisin Ryan, Shane O’ Mahony and midfielder Conor McMahon. St. Kieran’s competed well around the middle third and went in at the break trailing by the narrowest of margins, 0-5 to 0-4, leaving everything to play for in the second half.
Athea operating at Premier Junior level gained the upper hand during the third quarter as we struggled to maintain their first-half momentum and found it difficult to get our hands on the ball and build meaningful passages of play. A crucial Athea goal during this period proved to be the decisive score. Despite this setback, we continued to battle and created several goal and point scoring chances but were unlucky not to convert, and on another day could have taken something from the game.
Overall, there was plenty of encouragement from the effort and commitment shown, particularly from the younger players and debutants who performed admirably at this level.

St. Kieran’s now turn their attention to Round 2, where they face Mountcollins in Ardagh on April 5th. Team v Athea Con Enright, Shay Greaney, Sean Ryan, David O’ Connell, Jack Dowling, Anthony Mullins, Mikey Kelly, Conor McMahon, James O’ Connor, Darragh McMahon, Fionn Gleeson, Bryan Sheehan, Anthony Molyneaux, Oisin Ryan, Shane O’ Mahony, Chris Kiely, Jake Lynch, Dan Duggan, Darragh Breen, John Doyle, Eamon Ambrose, Eoin Burke, Brian O’ Neill.
