From the very first whistle, these girls fought like dogs for every ball – the hooking. Senior Hurling:
Mungret St. Pauls 1-17 Monaleen 0-21
Mungret St. Pauls are immensely proud of their Senior Hurlers following a superb championship campaign which saw them secure promotion to Group 1 for 2027, despite a narrow one-point defeat to Monaleen in the Senior Hurling Quarter Final at the TUS Gaelic Grounds on Sunday, 27 September 2026. Having competed in the Senior group 2 this year, Mungret St. Pauls had already achieved a major milestone by earning their promotion for next season. The quarter-final represented another opportunity to test themselves at the highest level, and the team produced a performance that showed just how far they have progressed. Mungret St. Pauls started the game with tremendous purpose and were excellent throughout the opening half. Brian Barry opened the scoring with two early points before Monaleen responded with two of their own. Mark O’Brien, Liam Lynch, Brian Barry and Barry Duff all added to the Mungret St. Pauls tally as the team moved the ball impressively through the lines. Further scores from Liam Lynch, Cian Moloney, Fintan Fitzgerald and Brian Barry kept Mungret St. Pauls in control, before a brilliant team move produced the game’s only goal. Rory Duff added another point as Mungret St. Pauls continued to work tirelessly across the field. At the other end, Conor O’Brien produced an outstanding save to deny Monaleen, while the Mungret St. Pauls defence worked extremely hard, with Matt, Eoin and Sean particularly prominent. The midfield pairing moved the ball effectively and the forwards continued to put pressure on the Monaleen defence.

Despite Mungret St. Pauls determined efforts, Monaleen continued to edge closer and eventually moved ahead. The Mungret St. Pauls players never stopped battling and continued to create opportunities, but the final whistle eventually sounded with Monaleen winning by the narrowest of margins. While the result was undoubtedly disappointing after leading by eight points at half-time, there is enormous pride in what this group has achieved. To progress from Group 2 to Group 1 for 2027 is a significant accomplishment and reflects the commitment, hard work and determination of the players and management throughout the year. The journey to this stage has been built on countless hours of training, preparation and dedication, and Sunday’s performance showed that Mungret St. Pauls belong at this level.
A huge thank you and well done to every player who has contributed to the Senior Hurling campaign, to the management and backroom team for their work throughout the year, and to everyone who has supported the team along the way. There may be disappointment at the narrow quarter-final defeat, but there is also plenty to celebrate, Group 1 awaits in 2027. We are incredibly proud of our Senior Hurlers and everything they have achieved this year. Well done to everyone involved in bringing Mungret St. Pauls to this stage.
