On Sunday last, in Senior football Mungret were drawn away to Old Mill for the quarter final of the Championship. Mungret were quick off the mark getting hitting the net early on, but then Old Mill came back with two goals of their own, Mungret did claw their way back some what but in the end the clock was against them. Final score Old Mill 3.08 Mungret 1.12. They will now enter the Senior B competition, next fixture on September 21st.
The U16 team played Feohanagh Castlemahon in the County Final last Saturday in St. Patricks. Well done to the Mungret girls who put in a gallant performance, This was end to end football with both teams giving it their all. but unfortunately, it just wasn’t to be on this day for Mungret as it was Feohanagh Castlemahon who came away with the spoils. Final score Feohanagh Castlemahon 1.09 Mungret 0.10.
What a brilliant day in Passage West Cork for the U12 girls. There were 3 teams made up of 42 girls. Great group and serious craic had by all.
U10 Hurling:
Our MSP U10s hurlers were in action over the weekend at Newtownshandrum, competing in the Dermot Naughton Memorial Tournament. The team was a mix of our u10’s & u9’s. Together they battled hard & played some fantastic hurling through out the day, saving their best game for the Shield final, winning against the hosts Newtownshandrum.
It’s great to see so many happy faces & all the hard work paying off. Well done!
Mungairt Naoimh Pól Abú!
Senior Hurling:
Mungret St. Pauls 1-21 Dromin/Athlacca 1-15
The Senior Hurling Championship group stages came to a close on Saturday, 13 September 2025 in Bruff as Mungret St. Pauls secured a strong victory over Dromin Athlacca, finishing out their campaign with a composed performance. Before throw-in, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Eddie Reilly, father of selector, Maurice, who had been laid to rest earlier that morning – a poignant and respectful tribute.
Mungret St. Pauls opened brightly, striking the first point from play inside the opening seconds. Dromin Athlacca quickly responded from a free, but it was Mungret St. Pauls who began to settle, clipping over another from play to regain the lead.
The early exchanges were even, with both sides trading scores up to the 13th minute when the game was level at 0-6 apiece. From there, Mungret St. Pauls began to take control. A purple patch between the 17th and 27th minutes saw Mungret St. Pauls hit five points without reply – a mixture of excellent play from open positions and composure from frees.
Although Dromin Athlacca managed to pull two frees back before the break, Mungret St. Pauls went in at half-time with a deserved 0-12 to 0-9 advantage. The work rate around the middle third and the accuracy of the forwards gave the Reds a solid platform.
Mungret St. Pauls resumed just as sharply as they had finished the first half, opening the scoring straight from the throw-in. A string of well-taken frees and points from play pushed them further in front, stretching the gap to six.
Even as Dromin Athlacca tried to rally, Mungret St. Pauls always had the reply. The decisive moment arrived in the 24th minute: a Mungret St. Pauls puck-out was cleanly caught, followed by a direct run at goal and a superb finish high into the top corner. The strike put clear daylight between the teams at 1-21 to 0-14. Although Dromin Athlacca grabbed a goal of their own from a free soon after and tagged on another late point, Mungret St. Pauls earlier dominance ensured there would be no comeback. The game closed out with Mungret St. Pauls 1-21 to 1-15 winners.
This was a performance full of discipline, accuracy, and intensity from Mungret St. Pauls. They controlled the middle stages of both halves, punished fouls with reliable free-taking, and sealed the result with a well-taken goal when it mattered most.
It was a fitting way to close the round stages of the championship, and the team – players and mentors – can take pride in both the display and the result. Unfortunately Mungret St. Pauls position on the table was dependent on the Newcastle West and Adare game, with Adare winning it left Mungret St. Pauls in third place.
Intermediate Hurling:
Full time Mungret St. Pauls 3-14 Croom 3-12
Mungret St. Pauls produced a spirited performance in Askeaton on Sunday 14 September 2025 to edge out Croom by two points in a thrilling last round match which was an end-to-end Intermediate Championship encounter. Goals proved the difference on the day, with Mungret St. Pauls striking three at key stages to hold off a determined Croom challenge.
The game got off to the perfect start for Mungret St. Pauls when, after just three minutes, they found the back of the net with a well-worked move finished clinically. While Croom responded with a point, Mungret St. Pauls immediately hit back with a second goal, giving them a six-point cushion at 2-0 to 0-1.
Two quick frees stretched the lead further, and although Croom kept in touch with placed balls of their own, Mungret St. Pauls forwards were lively and sharp. A fine point from play on 16 minutes was answered by a Croom free, but the game tightened up when Croom struck for a goal on 20 minutes, cutting the margin to just two.
Mungret St. Pauls replied instantly with a point from play, and then came a major score on 26 minutes – their third goal, expertly taken, restoring daylight. Croom added two points before the break, but Mungret St. Pauls still held a strong advantage at half-time: 3-4 to 1-6.
Croom started brightly after the restart, hitting three of the first four scores, including a well-finished goal on 5 minutes that dragged them right back into contention at 3-6 to 2-8. Mungret St. Pauls response was steady – frees were dispatched with composure and two excellent points from play in the 8th minute pushed them four clear again.
But this game was far from over. On 13 minutes, Croom struck their third goal to level matters at 3-9 apiece, setting up a tense final quarter. The sides traded points, with Croom nudging ahead for the first time on 21 minutes. Mungret St. Pauls showed great character, equalising quickly from a free and keeping their composure despite Croom edging in front again with two more frees.
With five minutes to go, Mungret St. Pauls trailed by a single point, but a vital score from play reduced the gap, and then their accuracy from frees and open play in the closing stages proved decisive. A free on 29 minutes brought the teams level once more, before two superb points from play in injury time sealed the victory.
This was a match where Mungret St. Pauls showed both flair and resilience. Their early goals set the tone, and while Croom battled back strongly and even led late on, Mungret St. Pauls composure under pressure told in the final minutes. With three goals and a spread of scorers combining with reliable free-taking, it was a deserved win that was a great way to sign off the championship.
Condolences:
Our deepest sympathies to the Reilly family on the sad passing of Eddie – beloved husband of Nora, father to Brian (former player), Maurice (current Senior Hurling selector and former player and coach), Siobhán and Áine, father-in-law to Nora, Annette, Pio and Fergal, and cherished grandfather of 12, including Mungret St. Pauls members Cian and Eoin.
Eddie was a true stalwart of Mungret St. Pauls, with his children and now his grandchildren proudly representing the club. A gentleman in every sense, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A page in the book of memory silently turns today. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
