Epic 3-Point win for Minors:
Limerick County Minor C Hurling Championship Final
Granagh/Ballingarry 1-20 Monagea 1-17
Granagh/Ballingarry have successfully retained their Limerick County Minor C Hurling Championship title with a three point 1-20 to 1-17 victory over unlucky Monagea in an epic 39 score contest in ideal conditions at UL North Campus pitch on Wednesday evening.
This was West’s only second ever County Minor C Hurling Championship Final played on the G4 pitch in Ul in front of a big crowd with Joe Mulcahy of Killeedy in charge in what was an end-to-end battle and must compare favourably to any of the great Premier A or B County Minor Hurling Championship finals ever with the issue in doubt right up to the final whistle. Monagea will be a little disappointed not to have taken the final to extra time as they created a couple of good chances in added time which they failed to convert against a firm Granagh/Ballingarry defence. The Granagh Ballingarry boys were dealt with a major blow when they were forced to line out minus All Ireland Minor Hurling Championship medallist with Limerick, Danny O’Grady, due to injury, while Monagea were at full strength. Monagea’s No. 12 Conor Hough and Granagh/Ballingarry’s No. 9 Eoghan Kiely traded white flags from open play in the opening two minutes before Edward Lynch of Granagh/Ballingarry split the uprights from out near the sideline following a good solo run to leave it 0-2 to 0-1 in favour of the boys in black and green on three minutes. Then Monagea won a free in front of the Granagh/Ballingarry goal which Conor Hough hi8t short to Tommy Harnett who finished past the Granagh/Ballinarry keeper Liam English, to leave the Monagea boys two ahead, 1-1 to 0-1 on four minutes. The Granagh/Ballingarry boys dominated the next five minutes with a trio of white flags courtesy of Darragh O’Donoghue (free) on 10 minutes before a pair of white flags for Monagea courtesy of Conor Hough from a place ball on 13 minutes and open play on 15 minutes, were cancelled out by Darragh O’Donoghue from a placed ball on 17 and 19 minutes before a long delivery by Granagh/Ballingarry’s No 9 Eoghan Kiely finished up in the back of the Monagea net a minute later to leave four between the sides, Granagh/Ballingarry 1-7, Monagea 1-3 on 20 minutes. In the final 10 minutes of this evenly contested opening half points were traded by Seán Lee (play) on 21 minutes and Darragh O’Donoghue (free) on 23 minutes, Declan Dunworth (play) on 24 minutes and Darragh Collins (play) on 25 minutes, Conor Hough (play) on 26 minutes, Eoghan Kiely (play) on 27 minutes, Seán Lee (play) on 29 minutes and Darragh O’Donoghue free on 30 minutes to send the Granagh/Ballingarry boys in at the interval leading by four 1-11 to 1-7, Conor Hough (play) and Edward Lynch (play), Conor Hough (play) and Declan Dunworth (free) traded white flags in the opening five minutes after the interval before a pair of white flags from open play for the boys in green and gold, courtesy of Seán Lee on 37 and 39 minutes to redfuce the deficit to two, Granagh/Ballingarry 1-13, Monagea 1-11. It was end to end for the next 15 minutes with points traded by Conor Hough (play) on 41 minutes and Darragh O’Donoghue (play) on 43 minutes, Darragh Collins (play) on 53 minutes and Adam, Mulqueen (play) on 45 minutes, Seán Lee (play) on 46 minutes, Darragh O’Donoghue (free) on 47 minutes, Conor Hough (free) on 49 minutes, Darragh O’Donoghue (free) on 50 minutes, Conor Hough (free) on 52 minutes. Then Granagh/Ballingarry lost their star midfielder Eoghan Kiely and points were traded by Conor Hough (play) on 55 minutes and Darragh O’Donoghue (free) on 56 minutes before Granagh/Ballingarry’s No9 6 Declan Dunworth split the uprights from a 60 metre placed ball two minutes later to extend the boys in black and green’s advantage to three, 1-20 to 1-17. The Monagea boys created a couple of goal scoring chances in the final two minutes plus which they failed to convert against a firm Granagh/Ballingarry defence who held out for a three point 1-20 to 1-17 if only just, victory to claim their second Limerick County Minor C Hurling Championship title in-a-row to stay in contention for a Limerick County Minor C Hurling and Football Championship double when they play Pallasgreen in the football decider on Wednesday 7th October in St. Patrick’s GAA Club grounds in Rhebogue at 7pm after an epic 39 score contest between two fine sporting sides which must compare favourably to any of the great Premier A or B County Minor Hurling Championship final in the past.

Conclusion:
It was a most difficult year for Granagh Ballingarry Intermediate Hurlers on the playing field, helped no doubt by a couple of retirements from the squad, players going abroad, injury and championship fixture cluster due to bereavements. We won 6 and lost 11 of our seventeen competitive games played this year, winning the Dunworth Cup for the second successive year and retained our Premier Intermediate status for 2026. Thank you to the players and the management team of John O’Connor, Ger Ryan, Mark O’Sullivan, physio Caolan Scott, first aid official Niamh O’Keeffe, stats James Flynn, Graham Russell, Niall Carroll and the backroom team too for their help and co-operation over the course of the season.
