County U17 Football League Division 4 Shield Final

Claughaun 2-13 Granagh-Ballingarry 2-8

Claughaun were crowned County U17 Football League Division 4 Shield champions with a hard fought 5 point 2-13 to 2-8 victory over unlucky Granagh-Ballingarry in ideal conditions at Staker Wallace GAA Club grounds in Kilbreedy on Wednesday evening.

A good crowd turned out for this West v City Copunty U17 Football League Division 4 Shield Final between two fine sporting sides with Seamus Hayes of Mungret-St. Paul’s in charge. The Claughaun boys with the wind at their backs dominated the opening 3 minutes at Kilbreedy with a trio of unanswered white flags from open play through Jack Kiely, Harry Hannon and Jack Kennedy before points were traded from open play by Granagh-Ballingarry captain Alex Condron on 4 minutes and Preston Humphreys to leave three between the sides, Claughaun 0-4, Granagh-Ballingarry 0-1 on 5 minutes. The Claughaun boys dominated the next 7 minutes with a well taken point from open play by Preston Humphreys on 6 minutes and a 2 pointer from play by Jack Kiely on 8 minutes and a well taken goal by Jake Griffin on 10 minutes followed on by a white flag from open play courtesy of Dylan Kett 2 minutes later to leave 9 between the sides, Claughaun 1-7, Granagh-Ballingarry 0-1 on 12 minutes.

The Granagh-Ballingarry boys far from being overawed dominated the next 12 minutes with a cracking Lia O’Kelly goal 1-1 from placed balls and a well taken point from open play by Alex Condron to reduce the deficit to the minimum, Claughaun 1-7, Granagh-Ballingarry 2-3 on 24 minutes. The boys in black and green created a couple of goal chances which they failed to convert before the city side finished this well contested opening half strong with a well taken point from open play by Preston Humphreys on 28 minutes followed up with a white flag from a 45 courtesy of Jack Kiely on 30 minutes to send the Claughaun boys in at the interval leading by 3, 1-9 to 2-3. Granagh-Ballingarry dominated the opening 8 minutes after the interval with a pair of white flags from open play courtesy of Liam English and Eoin Kiely to reduce the deficit to the minimum, Claughaun 1-9, Granagh-Ballingarry 2-5 on 38 minutes. A trio of white flags for the boys in green and white through Preston Humphreys on 40 minutes, Harry Hannon on 43 minutes and Eoin Byrnes two minutes later to extend the Claughaun boys’ advantage to four, 1-12 to 2-5 at the end of the third quarter. Points were traded from open play by Dion Hannon on 47 minutes and Eoin Kiely on 50 minutes before Sean Fitzgerald following a good solo run raised the Claughaun boys’ second green flag 3 minutes later to extend the boys from the Childers Road advantage to 7, 2-13 to 2-6 on 52 minutes. The Granagh-Ballingarry boys far from being overawed had a pair of white flags from open play, Adam Mulqu3en on 55 and 59 minutes, which was too little too late for the boys from Knockfierna. At the final whistle Claughaun were worthy winners by 5 points, 2-13 to 2-8 over unlucky Granagh-Ballingarry who failed to convert a number of good chances over the 60 minutes to claim the Countyu U17 Football League Division 4 Shield title after a hard fought contest between two fine sporting sides. Hearty congratulations to Christ the Saviour National School Ballingarry 5th and 6th class team and coaches on winning a great double West Primary Schools Division 1 Hurling title for the second successive year and the Limerick County League Cup title for the first time in the history of the school and only the second school ever in the West to win the County title. This double success is a great honour for the players, their school, family and our club.

All Ireland Minor Hurling Championship semi-final

Hearty congratulations to the Limerick minor hurlers, our own Danny O’Grady, a member of the squad on their impressive 9 point, 2-16 to 0-13 victory over neighbours on Sunday at Semple Stadium, Thurles to qualify for a clash with Leinster champions Galway in the All Ireland Minor Hurling Championship semi-final for the first time since 2020 on Saturday 13th or Sunday 14th June.

The best of luck to the Limerick U17 hurlers and management and especially our own Liam English, a member of the squad who play neighbours Clare in the Celtic challenge hurling final this Saturday 6th June at 2pm. Venue to be confirmed. Please support.

Jim (Twin) Lynch Memorial Cup Final in aid of St. Ita’s Rehabilitation Unit

All roads lead to Granagh-Ballingarry GAA Grounds in Ballingarry on Friday 26th June (provisionally) at 7.30pm for the mouth-watering clash of 7-in-a-row seeking Granagh-Ballingarry and neighbours Bruree in the final of the 7th annual Granagh-Ballingarry Jim (Twin) Lynch Memorial Cup hurling tournament. All proceeds of a bucket collection at the Memorial Cup Final will go to the Rehabilitation Unit in St. Ita’s Community Hospital in Newcastle West. The late Jim (Twin) Lynch had a life long association with the GAA and the Granagh-Ballingarry club and at the time of his sudden passing on Tuesday 28th May 2019 the assistant secretary of the West Limerick GAA Board. Your support of the Memorial Cup Final and the Rehabilitation Unit in St. Ita’s Hospital, Newcastle West would be greatly appreciated.

The best of luck to the Limerick senior hurlers manager John Kiely, our own Donal and Darragh O’Grady and the rest of the management team who play holders and neighbours Cork in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship Final this Sunday 7th June in Pair Uí Chaoimh Cork at 2pm.

Limerick will be contesting their 54th final and aiming for their 26th title and their seventh in eight seasons. Cork will be contesting their 86th final and seeking their 56th title and two-in-a-row. It will be the 139th final in the competition since Cork won the first one in 1888, receiving a walkover from Clare. Your support for the boys in gree3n and white and the management would be appreciated at Pairc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday for the 2pm throw in to cheer them on in their bid to revert last year’s 3-2 penalty shoot out and make a League and Munster Senior Hurling Championship double over the Rebels this season.

Granagh-Ballingarry GAA received a total of 173 tickets (33 stand and 140 terrace) for Sunday’s Munster Senior Hurling Championship Final Limerick v Cork on Sunday 7th June in Pairc Uí Chaoimh Cork at 2pm.

The following club members received tickets – officers of senior and Bord na nOg club, team management, Club and County Draw promoters, lottery, finance and field committee, first aid officers, etc.

The remaining tickets were drawn between paid up members of the club draw. All winners of tickets should now have received their links to purchase tickets. Thank you to all club members for their co-operation to implement the sale of tickets satisfactorily and hopefully there will be big Granagh-Ballingarry support on the day.

There was no winner of the €4,300 jackpot in the Granagh/Ballingarry GAA Club lottery draw on Saturday 30th May in Condron’s Bar, Ballingarry. The numbers drawn were 4, 6, 15 and 24. The lucky dip winners of 20 each went to Cora McCarthy promoter online, Mary Roche, Kieran Mulqueen and Donal McGoey.

The next draw will be held on Saturday 6th June in the Rock Bar, Granagh for a jackpot of 4,400.
