County Senior Championship:
Fr. Caseys 1-13 Oola 2-10
Kilmallock was the venue for round 2 of the Irish wire county senior football championship on Saturday as Oola and Fr Casey’s met. Both teams had contrasting results from round 1 with Oola looking to build on a big win over Na Piarsaigh while our boys looked to get back on track after losing to Adare in a repeat of last years final. As lighting lit up the sky around the Ballyhoura mountains, on the pitch it was the team in blue who go off to a lightning fast start. Rory scoring the opening score with a fisted point after great build up play that involved most the team. Then when Adrian pounced on a wayward kickout from the Oola keeper and was hauled down for a penalty expertly converted to the corner of the net by Eliah Riordan. When David Ward fisted over another point the score board read very much in our favour 1-2 to no score, when many felt it could have been even more such was the dominance of the start. The game turned on its head when straight from the next kickout, Oola won it and raced forward and were awarded a penalty of their own. A rapid fire point followed for the men near the tipp border but we responded with 2 of our own from the Quirke cousins Dylan and Ronan. 1-4 to 1-1 but that was as good as it got for Fr Casey’s for the rest of the game. Oola really took over till the end of the half and when they countered after sloppy attack play by the Abbeyfeale men and pounced for a second goal of the half it was a lead lost that would never be regained again. As the half drew to a close at the short whistle Oola had a 2 point lead going into the dressing room.
The second half was more attritional with both teams fighting tooth and nail for each possession and score. Oola kicked the first score of the half but the experienced heads in the Casey’s forward line pulled them together with David Ward and Adrian Enright kicking scores to leave the minimum between the teams. With Oola kicking 2 pointers for fun it seemed, Josh Ryan the Limerick goal keeper kicking the 3rd for them it stretched it out to a 3 point lead once again going into the last 15 minutes. To be fair to our boys they never shirked responsibility and kept chipping away and when Ronan Quirke kicked a free to level it with a few minutes to go we seemed to have momentum at that juncture, 1-13 to 2-10. The last 5 minutes was frantic with both teams winning possession tough and losing it cheaply. When 2 long range 2 point frees drifted agonisingly wide both shaving the left post from Eliadhs right boot time was up. When John Halloran blew the long whistle to signal a close to proceedings both teams will feel lucky to get a draw but also feel they left a win out on the field with some the opportunities missed throughout the game. For the Abbeyfeale side it means the next round in early September takes on even more importance against a Monaleen side with 2 from 2.
County Junior A Championship:
Fr. Caseys 0-13 Monagea 0-12
The Junior team returned to scene of a first round victory Sunday evening to play another local rival in Monagea. A beautiful evening and the Tournafulla pitch as always in excellent condition it was bound to be a tight affair between 2 teams who it is always a toss of a coin between. Casey’s started well getting the score board ticking through the ageless Billy Quirke. However the next 20 minutes belonged to Monagea, they owned the ball and when the ball went up it was sloppy play or poor selection that allowed Monagea dictate play and pile the pressure on. To their credit the Abbeyfeale full back line held strong with Callum O Connor and Cillian Cotter flanking the experienced Tommy O Keeffe. When Monagea hit a 6th point on the trot to lead 0-6 to 0-1 it looked like the writing could be on the wall with last year’s beaten semi-finalists looking by far the better team. However with 10 to go in the first half Casey’s got a bit of parity around the middle with Jake Quirke and Cathal Woulfe winning primary possession and turning over the ball in tackles giving better faster ball to the forwards and it was the Tournafulla men Jamie Dore and Billy Quirke who really took the scoring to Monagea. When Billy kicked a 2 pointer before half time to make it a 3 point game it was back in the melting pot 9-6. When the second half started the Casey’s team was thriving with young players growing in to it and with Robbie Browne in the 6 jersey, drinking out the fountain of eternal youth, driving the team forward. Liam O Connor and Dylan O Connor combined well in the half forward line and carried the ball that had Monagea on the back foot. When Donagh Kelly scored a free mid-way through the second half followed by Jamie Dore from play it was a lead that wouldn’t be relinquished. When the twin McEnerys entered the fray it was like reeling in the years when a beautiful ball by Eoin found Paraic and with an outrageous point off his left leg it put Casey’s 2 ahead. Monagea pushed and reduced it to the bare minimum but Casey’s held strong and got the vital 2 points that puts them top of the group as they head to play Ballybrown in round 3.
