BALLYSTEEN GAA CLUB NOTES
Senior Football
Following on from last weekend’s impressive victory over Ballylanders in the opening round of the Championship, we made the trip to Kilbreedy to face Monaleen. No changes were made to the starting 15 and we made a bright start as Mark Ranahan and Darragh Ranahan kicked us into an early lead. The match wasn’t as open as last weekend’s encounter, but it was just as intense and exciting as both sides looked to gain an advantage in the opening period under the floodlit conditions. Our first goal came from a penalty following a sweeping move through the field that saw Cillian Ferris fouled inside the box. Mark Ranahan finished expertly to give us a four-point lead after the opening quarter. Monaleen made inroads into our advantage through Ger Collins but our defence was resolute forcing our opponents into long range efforts for the remainder of the half. Our second goal came another sweeping move that saw Shane Gallagher field a high cross field pass before turning his man and slotting the ball under the goalkeeper. At half time the score was 2-05 to 0-04.
The lads knew that a big 30 minutes lay ahead of them in the second half and worked tirelessly to prevent Monaleen from making a comeback. The work rate of Shane Hallinan and Sean Whelan forced many turnovers in our own half while also doing great work up front in setting up opportunities. The score of the game came from Jamie O’Sullivan as he weaved his way through the Monaleen defence and finished with a fine point from his right foot. Not to be out-done, his midfield partner James O’Meara finished off our scoring with a fine solo effort. The full-time score finished 2-09 to 0-07 meaning as we head to the summer break, we have two wins from two which puts us into a great position to make the knock out stages. The panel of players, coaches and management have put in a huge effort since the start of the year and it’s great to see their effort rewarded with victories in their opening games of the Championship. Our Round 3 fixture against defending two-time County Champions Adare, will take place towards the end of July.
