Athea GAA Club Notes:

Men’s Result:
Woodlands House Hotel County Premier Junior A Football Championship Group 2 – Round 5
Saturday 12th September, 2026
Athea 1-16 Glin 2-5
Athea produced a strong second-half performance to record an impressive eight-point
victory over Glin, winning 1-16 to 2-5 after a competitive encounter. Andrew O’Riordan opened the scoring for Athea, before Shane Mulvihill added a free to give Athea an early two-point advantage. Glin responded strongly, however, and a goal midway through the opening half helped them establish a four-point lead. Mulvihill was important in keeping Athea in touch, converting four frees during the opening half, while Evan Curry brought the sides level with a point from play approaching half-time.
Athea raised the tempo considerably after the restart. Micheal Dalton and Denis Greaney
were particularly strong around the middle of the field and played a major role as Athea
began to gain control of proceedings. Brian O’Connor was prominent going forward and registered two points from play, while James Hunt had a very good game. Hunt defended strongly but also contributed going forward, including an important second-half point from play. Sean Ryan became increasingly influential as the game progressed, contributing three
points from play in the second half as Athea began to pull away. The decisive period came midway through the second half. Daire O’Shea found the net and also contributed a point, before Evan Curry landed an excellent two-pointer from distance to stretch Athea’s advantage to nine points. Curry was an important attacking presence, finishing with three points in total, before being forced off through injury later in the half. TJ Hunt also contributed a point from a free as Athea’s spread of scorers helped them take control.
Glin did manage a second goal late in the contest, but Athea responded well, with further
scores from Sean Ryan ensuring there would be no comeback. There were plenty of positives for Athea. Micheal Dalton and Denis Greaney were excellent through the middle, James Hunt produced a very strong all-round display, while Athea had a good spread of scorers throughout the team. Most encouraging was the manner in which Athea improved as the game progressed. Having been four points behind during the first half, they gradually took control and produced an excellent second-half display to run out deserving winners. We now proceed to the Quarter Finals where we meet Camogue Rovers on Saturday October 3rd.
Athea scorers Daire O’Shea 1-1; Shane Mulvihill 0-4 (4 frees); Evan Curry 0-3 (one two-
pointer); Sean Ryan 0-3; Brian O’Connor 0-2; Andrew O’Riordan 0-1; James Hunt 0-1; TJ

U14 Football Cup Semi-Final:
We travelled to Mick Neville Park Rathkeale last Saturday to play Bruff in the county Semi-final. The result didn’t go our way on the day, but we are very proud of the effort from the boys on the day and all year.
We started the year with 16 players and finished the year with 23 players which is the best success we could want, ranging in age from under 10 to 14-year-olds. The younger boys got great experience which will stand to them next year and the older boys gave great example and leadership to their young teammates. We played all our league matches only losing one and also played three challenge matches, which all contributed to an enjoyable and successful year. This group has a bright future ahead of them, well done.

U6 and U8 Coiste:
Well done to the Athea U8 and U6 footballers. It was amazing to see 52 young footballers at their end of season parish Blitz Friday evening. They should be very proud of themselves for the performances they put in to finish off a great year.
Huge thanks to head coach Ger Collins and all volunteers who make sure the kids get the chance to enjoy the sport and have fun playing every week.

Ladies:
Huge Congratulations to our Junior Ladies who got the upper hand over Ahane at home on Sunday, winning 7:10 to 2:05 and are in a great position going forward.
Hard luck to the Athea / Glin u16s who were beaten by a strong St Ailbes outfit on Saturday morning. They never gave up and played their hearts out until the final whistle. Thank you to every single girl who showed up and put in the effort all year – you did both clubs Athea / Glin Emmets proud. The club would like to wish a speedy recovery to Laura Healy and Loren Healy.

Underage Girls’ Football:
Excellent football displayed recently by our u10s against Moyvane, they showed great skill and teamwork, well done girls! It was also great to see so many young footballers at the U6 and U8 parish league during the week. Keep up the good work girls.
