Athea welcomed Knockaderry on Tuesday evening last for a very enjoyable game of football. The game was played at a fast pace with plenty of scores to keep the spectators entertained. Both teams played to a very high standard. This group of boys have great interest and love playing matches and training every Friday, and you can see how much they are improving each week. Our next game is at home on Tuesday 18th to Feohanagh Castlemahon.

Our adult ladies got their campaign underway against Pallasgreen. Having contested the last two finals, we knew we were facing a strong and experienced home side. Pallasgreen started brightly and got on top early, kicking some excellent points to build an early lead. Our girls settled into the game and worked hard but found it difficult to turn possession into scores. At half-time, Pallasgreen led 1-10 to 3 points. Athea came out strongly in the second half and showed great character, reducing the deficit to just six points after 10 minutes. However, two quick-fire goals against the run of play gave Pallasgreen a cushion that ultimately proved too difficult to overcome, leaving the final score 3.12 to 10 points. The girls battled right to the final whistle and can take plenty of positives from the game. For such a young team, there is lots to learn and plenty of encouragement to take from the performance. The focus now turns to our next fixture, when we’re back at home this Sunday at 11am V Galtee Gaels. We’ll be hoping for a big home support as the girls look to get their first win of the campaign.

Huge well done to our U12 Ladies who travelled to Moyvane on Saturday morning to take part in this year’s Festival of Football. The girls played four fantastic games against tough Kerry opposition: Duagh, Moyvane, Miltown/Castlemaine and Corca Dhuibhne, showing great skill, effort and teamwork throughout. It was a brilliant morning of football, fun and friendship, with all players giving their very best in every game. A huge thank you to Moyvane for hosting such a well-run and enjoyable event, and for the warm welcome given to all teams involved.

Athea Mothers & Others are back training and everyone is welcome to join for fitness, fun and football. It doesn’t matter if you have played for 20 years or never kicked a ball in your life, come and join the ladies for a bit of craic at Athea GAA pitch on Wednesdays at 7pm.
