County Junior C Football Championship Group 1 – Round 2
Tuesday 21st July, 2026 at 7:30pm
Athea 4-17 St Senan’s 1-9
Venue: Athea, Referee: Sean Hartnett.
We played the second round of the Junior C championship at home to St Senan’s last Tuesday in Athea. There were good performances all round, as we were never troubled in this game. James Ryan started at corner forward and was busy cutting in from the left wing notching three points early in the game. James Broderick had a fine game and had scored 2-3 by half time. We had a broad range of scorers with Michael Tierney clocking our only two-pointer. Alan Kelly hit the net midway through the half. Tom F Ahern continued his good run of form and had tacked on two points in the first half. St. Senan’s won a penalty and had a run of three scores late in the first half to leave the half-time score at Athea 3-12, St Senan’s 1-4. In the second half, we added 1-5 to the scoreboard. Aidan Curry raised a green flag before the subs bench was run. Five late points by St. Senan’s built their score in a second half which was more competitive. This was a welcome bounce back from the defeat to Rathkeale and leaves us with a good points difference. Our next game is at home to Na Piarsaigh on August 16th. Full-time Score was Athea 4-17 St. Senans 1-9. Team Colin Broderick, Cillian O Connor, Conor Fitzgerald (C), Philip Daly, Gavin
Ambrose, Martin Chawke, Pierse O’Brien, Mark Reidy (0-2), Tadhg Ahern, Michael Tierney (0-2,1tp), Alan Kelly (1-0), Tom Ahern (0-3), Aidan Curry (1-1,0-1f), James Broderick (2-4), James Ryan (0-4). U18 Boys’ Football Championship Round 2:
Result: Athea 3-12 Granagh/Ballingarry 3-14
We lost out by 2 points in this rip-roaring game last Wednesday night in Ballingarry.
We started slow and found ourselves 6 points behind after 10 minutes, but with Eric Barrett, Tom F Ahern and Aaron Broderick thundering into the game, we gradually got a foothold, although we still trailed by 6 at half time, 3-10 to 2-07.
Kane Brouder and Jamie O’Mahony made a big contribution when they came out to the middle third, but for a few passes going astray we could easily have got a draw or even a win.
Overall, a great effort once again from this hard-working team, with all 19 players contributing.
Team Eoin Ahern, Tiernan Collins, Jamie O’Mahony, Daniel Broderick, Tony Ambrose, Mark Ahern, Patrick Healy, Daniel Hunt, Mark Colllins, Aaron Broderick, Tom F Ahern, Tony Ahern, Paddy O Connor, Eric Barrett, Kane Brouder. Subs Eoin Brosnan, John Ahern, Tadhg Hunt and Conor Leech.
Our next game is at home to Caherconlish on Wednesday August 5th at 7pm. followed by an away game to Newcastle West on Wednesday August 19th.
