County League Division 8 Final
Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan 6-14. Athea 3-06
We made the short trip to Ballyhahill on Tuesday last where we met ABK in the County League Division 8 final. We had met them in March on a very heavy pitch in Askeaton and the game was competitive. However, for this one the pitch was in great order and the weather was very warm in the middle of last week’s heatwave. The difference between the two sides became apparent early in the game as ABK got two quick points and then hit the net early.
Denis Greaney who put in a big shift throughout the game hit a two pointer to register our first score. They continued to score points and then struck for their second goal.
To our credit we rallied back with two goals from James Broderick, one was a penalty, and with a further one from Brian O Connor we kept in touch with our opponents by half-time when the score was ABK 2-08 Athea 3-02.
However, we were too porous throughout and couldn’t match ABK ‘s firepower. In the second half we leaked three goals early into the second half which proved to be too big a hill for us to climb. ABK found rhythm and continued to build a healthy lead.
We did get scores from Darren Murphy and Tom Ahern but we had no answer to the strong performance by ABK.
The final score was ABK 6-14 Athea 3-06.
Despite this loss we do get promoted to Division 7 next year. Team Colin Broderick, Cillian O Connor, Conor Fitzgerald (C), Philip Daly, Pierce O Brien, Martin Chawke, Gavin Ambrose, Tadhg Ahern, Denis Greaney (0-2), Michael Tierney, Michael Walsh, Jason Kelly, Alan Kelly, Brian O Connor (1-02), James Broderick (2-0). Subs Tomas Ahern, Rory Cleary, Mark Reidy, Tom Ahern (0-1), Jason Dalton, Darren Murphy (0-1), Dan McMahon, William Sexton, Mark Horgan, Daire O Shea.
