County League – Division 8 Round 5:
Athea 1-16 Galbally 3-08
After the disappointment of our match last week against South Liberties we had renewed focus in Athea on Sunday when we faced Galbally who were ahead of us in the League Table.
The visitors got off to the better start playing with the wind and had four points on the board after ten minutes as we suffered a black card leaving us down to fourteen and conceding a penalty. Tomas Ahern proved himself to be a great penalty shot stopper as he dived to his left and kept us in the game. James Broderick and Brian O Connor knocked over points as Galbally continued to clock up scores mainly through Jack Donovan at full forward. We trailed by five points when a well worked move by Tadhg Ahern lead to a goal which narrowed the gap to two. Brian O Connor and Donovan exchanged points before halftime to leave the score at the interval at1-03 to 0-08.
In the second half, we conceded a very early goal before Mark Reidy pointed. We then conceded another goal and looked to be in trouble. However playing with the wind and by upping the tempo we clawed back the lead. Aidan Curry was accurate from placed balls and scored six points including a two pointer free and one from play. Mark Reidy added a further three points from play and James Broderick and Rory Cleary helped build the lead. Galbally hit a third goal in the second half to reduce the margin back to one point. However, Brian O Connor pushed out the margin to two with a late free to leave the final score Athea 1-16 Galbally 3-08.
The win means that we finish second in the group and are now in the Division 8 final against ABK. The A team are in the division 6 final against St. Kierans after receiving a walkover on Saturday.
