Mens Results:
County League- Division 6 Round 2
Athea 1–15 Castletown Ballyagran 2–8
Athea produced a strong second-half finish to secure a deserved four-point victory over Castletown Ballyagran, but we were pushed all the way in an entertaining and at times nervy contest. Castletown Ballyagran made the sharper start, settling quickly and opening up a three-point lead with some well-taken early scores. Athea, however, grew steadily into the game, with TJ Hunt getting us off the mark from placed balls.
The turning point of the first half arrived midway through when a slick attacking move was finished to the net by Brian O’Connor after good build-up play involving Andrew O’Riordan. That goal swung momentum decisively in Athea’s favour.
With Hunt continuing to convert frees and O’Riordan adding from play, Athea pushed ahead and built a solid cushion, going in at the break with a deserved lead
Athea came out firing after the restart, extending our advantage to seven points through scores from Callum Buckley, Jamie Collins and O’Riordan. At that stage, we appeared to be in full control. However, a combination of wasteful shooting from us and a determined response from Castletown Ballyagran brought the visitors right back into contention.
Two quick goals turned the game dramatically, with the second levelling matters midway through the half and setting up a tense finale.
To our credit, Athea regrouped when it mattered most. TJ Hunt steadied the side with a crucial point before Jason Kelly and Brian O’Connor added important scores from play.
Hunt, who earlier saw a penalty go narrowly wide, remained influential throughout and capped the scoring late on to restore a four-point cushion.
Despite their inefficiency in front of goal, Athea’s resilience and greater spread of scorers ultimately proved decisive. Team Colin Broderick, Sean Twomey, Tommy Quaid, Pierce O’Brien, Jamie Collins (0-1),Callum Buckley (0-1), Eoin Sheahan, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Tadhg Ahern, Jason Kelly (0-1) Andrew O Riordan (0-3), TJ Hunt, (0-7,5f) James Hunt, Brian O’ Connor (1-2), Alan Kelly, Subs: Tomas Ahern, Michael Tierney, Kevin Murphy, Philip Daly, , Gavin Ambrose, Rory Cleary.
