Athea GAA Club Notes:

Mens:
County League- Division 6
Athea 1–10 St. Kierans 0–8
We produced a strong second-half display on Saturday at home to record a 1–10 to 0–8 victory, with a crucial goal from TJ Hunt helping us pull clear after a tight opening half.
We made a bright start and opened the scoring inside the first minute when Andrew O’Riordan split the posts from play. They responded with a free to level matters, but we regained the lead shortly afterwards through Sean Ryan, who finished well from play.
A free from TJ Hunt pushed us two points clear midway through the half, but they kept in touch and briefly edged ahead following a point from play. We responded well, with Andrew O’Riordan and Sean Ryan both finding the target again to restore our advantage.
They continued to apply pressure and drew level once more, but a late point from Sean Ryan ensured we went into the break narrowly in front after a closely contested opening half.
The second half proved decisive as we began to take control. Brian O’Connor was influential in attack and opened the scoring after the restart with a well-taken point from play.
The key moment of the match arrived six minutes into the second half when TJ Hunt found the net from close range after good attacking play. The goal gave us a three-point cushion and shifted momentum firmly in our favour.
Hunt followed up with a point from a free soon after, while Brian O’Connor continued to cause problems for their defence, adding further points from play as we stretched our lead.
They battled hard and added a couple of points late on, but we remained composed and finished the game strongly, with O’Connor landing another well-taken point to seal the win.
With strong scoring contributions from Brian O’Connor, TJ Hunt, Sean Ryan, and Andrew O’Riordan, we ultimately had too much attacking quality and saw out the contest comfortably in the closing stages.

County League – Division 8 Round 1:
Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan 2-03. Athea 0-08
We travelled to Askeaton for the first round of the Division 8 League on Sunday in squally weather conditions. The pitch was very soft and the wind was very unpredictable which made for low scoring conditions.
Despite conceding a very early goal we recovered with points from Michael Tierney and Brian O Connor. ABK scored appoint from play before we scored four points without reply with scores from Brian O Connor with a brace and Rory Cleary and Tadhg Ahern.
The halftime score was ABK 1-01 Athea 0-06.
In the second half, ABK opened the scoring before Jim Ahern scored a neat point. ABK pointed again before Brian O Connor scored his fourth point of the game which was a repeat of his Saturday tally. ABK scored a late goal and a point in a hard fought contest to win by two.
Tomas and Tom Ahern both made their debuts at this level and gave very good accounts of themselves. The final score was Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan 2:04 Athea 0:08.
Overall, there were plenty of positives in this game and things to work on before our next match in three weeks time. We had six subs which was great given that we fielded a team in Division 6 on Saturday. Panel: Aidan Curry, Jamie Collins, Martin Chawke, Jack Sexton, Gavin Ambrose, Conor Fitzgerald, Pierce O’Brien, Tadhg Ahern, Michael Tierney, Tomas Ahern, Brian O Connor, Rory Cleary, Tom Ahern, Michael Walsh, James Broderick, Alan Kelly, Jim Ahern, Dan McMahon, Jack Hunt, Gearoid O Sullivan, Colin Broderick.
Athea Ladies:
Minor League Division 2 Round 2
Athea 4.4 Monagea 4.8
Playing with a strong wind in the first half our girls were the first off the mark with a goal from the throw in by Maeve Murphy.
Monagea settled well and found themselves back level after 5 mins. It was end to end stuff for here on. With some great passes of play – probably the best best move coming from a kick out won by Geraldine Carmody a great pass to Emma Scanlon with Emma Sweeney finishing to the back of the next.Half time Athea 4.2 to 2.3.
With the weather conditions depleting and Monagea working hard the game was level with 10 mins remaining. Monagea got the all important scores at the end to leave it 4.4 to 4.8 in the visitors favour. Huge great to both teams for a great game of football in very poor wintery conditions. The girls will play their final game of this round next Sunday v’s Dromin / Athlacca in Athea at 11 Sunday 22nd March.
