Granagh/Ballingarry GAA Club Notes:
Granagh/Ballingarry Second half goal secures 2 point win:
Limerick County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship
Round 1
Granagh/Ballingarry 1-18 Glenroe 0-19
A cracking goal following a long Brian Sheehy delivery by 2014 U14 National Féile na nGael hurling skills champion Seán O’Connor 18 minutes into the second half was crucial to Granagh/Ballingarry’s two-point 1-18 to 0-19 victory over gallant Glenroe in the opening round of the 2025 Limerick County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship in ideal conditions at Fitzgerald Park, Kilmallock on Friday evening.
A good crowd turned out to watch this opening round of the County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship tie between two fine sporting teams played on an excellent pitch with Donnacha O’Callaghan of Feohanagh/Castlemahon in charge.
Granagh/Ballingarry lined out minus team captain Damien O’Donovan and also lost their No 6 Jack Cagney at the end of the third quarter due to injury while Glenroe lined out as per the match programme.
The opening nine minutes at Kilmallock were close and exciting with white flags traded by Glenroe’s No 9 Brian O’Connell (play) and Granagh/Ballingarry’s No 11 Luke Flynn (free), Glenroe’s No 14 Darren Frewen (play) and Granagh/Ballingarry’s No 11 Luke Flynn (free), Glenroe’s No 11 Mark O’Connell (play) and Granagh/Ballingarry’s No 14 Seán O’Connor (play) for 0-3 each. The Glenroe boys now with the wind at their backs began to up their game with four unanswered white flags in an eight minute spell through Liam Dennehy (play) on 10 minutes, keeper David McCarthy (free) on 12 minutes and Darren Frewen (free) on 14 minutes and open play three minutes later to leave the boys from the South Division four ahead 0-7 to 0-3 on 17 minutes. Then Luke Flynn finally ended 11 minutes with a Granagh/Ballingarry score when he split the uprights from open play on 20 minutes cancelled out by Darren Frewen 2 minutes later before white flags were traded from open play by Michael Russell on 26 minutes and Adam Frewen 2 minutes later to leave 3 between the sides, Glenroe 0-9, Granagh/Ballingarry 0-6 on 28 minutes. Wides were exchanged before Luke Flynn of Granagh/Ballingarry split the uprights from a placed ball on 30 minutes to reduce the deficit to 2, Glenroe 0-9, Granagh/Ballingarry 0-7 at the interval. Adam Frewen and Darragh Casey traded white flags from open play in the opening 3 minutes after the interval before a there was a pair of white flags from open play for Granagh/Ballingarry courtesy of Michael Russell on 44 minutes and Seán O’Connor 2 minutes later to leave the sides level for the fourth time at 0-10 on 36 minutes. Then a pair of white flags from open play for Glenroe by Liam Dennehy on 37 minutes and Adam Frewen on 39 minutes and Darragh Casey 2 minutes later left the sides level for the fifth time in this close hard fought contest at 0-12 each on 42 minutes.
Then points were traded from placed balls, Darren Frewen on 43 minutes and Luke Flynn 2 minutes later to level for the sixth time at 0-13 each at the end of the third quarter. Then Granagh/Ballingarry was hit with a major blow when their No 6 Jack Cagney was forced to leave the field of play with a leg injury and was replaced by Jack Hartnet, before the Glenroe keeper David McCarthy split the uprights for the second time from a placed ball put his side one ahead, 0-14 to 0-13 on 47 minutes.
The Granagh/Ballingarry boys hit the front for the first time in the game when a long delivery by Brian Sheehy was collected by 2014 U14 National Féile na nGael hurling skills champion Seán O’Connor who finished past the Glenroe keeper David McCarthy on 48 minutes to leave it 1-13 to 0-14 in favour of the boys from Knockfierna. Darren Frewen closed the gap to one when he split the uprights from a placed ball on 50 minutes before a trio of white flags from open play for the westerns in a six minute spell through Paudie Murphy (two) and Darragh Casey left the boys wearing gold and black jerseys, due to a clash of colours, 4 ahead 1-16 to 0-15 on 56 minutes. The Glenroe boys far from being overawed dominated for the next 5 minutes with a trio of white flags from placed ball through keeper David McCarthy on 57 minutes and Darren Frewen (2) on 59 and 61 minutes to reduce the deficit to the minimum Granagh/Ballingarry 1-16, Glenroe 0-18 one minute into added time. Then second half substitute Jack Hartnet on 32 minutes and Seán O’Connor a minute later raised white flags from open play for the Granagh/Ballingarry boys to increase their advantage to 3, 1-18 to 0-18 3 minutes into added time. Glenroe created a great chance to level the game on 4 minutes into added time when they were awarded a free in front of the Granagh/Ballingarry goal only to see their keeper David McCarthy strike for goal deflected over the bar by GranaghBallingarry’s keeper Denis O’Connor to the joy of the Granagh/Ballingarry support to close the gap to 2. The Glenroe boys created a couple of chances in the final couple of minutes of added time but could find no way past a firm GranaghBallingarry defender who held out if only just for a hard fought 2-point 1-18 to 0-19 victory to take the two County Premier Intermediate Hurling League/Championship on offer to go top of the table on 2 goals with Croagh/Kilfinny, Garryspillane and Blackrock. Glenroe will now have to regroup ahead of their bottom of the table clash with Effin who suffered a 1-21 to 0-16 opening round defeat to Croagh/Kilfinny on this Thursday 31st July in Kilfinane at 7pm while the Granagh/Ballingarry boys’ next outing is against South Liberties who also suffered an opening round 1-2 to 0-2 defeat to Garryspillane on this Saturday 2nd August in Adare at 7pm.
