Athea GAA Club Notes:

Mens:
Division 6 County League Final
Athea 0-9 St. Kierans 2-13
Athea fell short in the Division 6 County League Final in Athea last Wednesday evening as a strong second-half display from St Kieran’s saw the visitors claim the title on a 2-13 to 0-09 scoreline.
Played in front of a good attendance in Athea, the home side started brightly and looked the sharper team during the opening quarter. Early points from Andrew O Riordan and Brian O Connor settled Athea into the contest, while the work rate around the middle third ensured St Kieran’s found it difficult to build momentum early on.
Further scores from James Hunt and Brian O’Connor helped Athea open a four-point lead midway through the first half, and with TJ Hunt accurate from placed balls, the hosts looked in a strong position.
However, St Kieran’s gradually worked their way back into the game through the scoring threat of Anthony Molyneaux. The influential forward clipped over a series of points before striking for a crucial goal just before half time to give St Kieran’s a 1-5 to 0-6 lead at the break.
To Athea’s credit, they responded well after the restart. Scores from TJ Hunt and James Ryan reduced the margin to the minimum and briefly swung momentum back towards the home side.
But St Kieran’s showed their experience in the final quarter, taking control around midfield and punishing Athea turnovers. Molyneaux continued to lead the charge, while Cathal McEnery proved decisive with an excellent goal after rounding the goalkeeper midway through the second half. That score gave the visitors breathing space and they pushed on from there with further points from McEnery, Sean Ryan and Jack Ben Hartnett.
Despite the disappointment of defeat, Athea can take encouragement from their first-half display and the commitment shown throughout the campaign. On the day, St Kieran’s finishing power and greater clinical edge in attack proved the difference.

County Football League Division 8 Final:
Date: Tuesday May 26th 2026 at 7:15pm. Venue: Ballyhahill
Athea v Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan
After three wins in the group stage our second team advance to the Division 8 County League final where we meet Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan in Ballyhahill. We met them in the opening round of the league in Askeaton and were beaten by a small margin on a very heavy pitch in March.
With powerful weather conditions this week we can expect a firm pitch and faster play leading to more scores. ABK will be favourites for this final as they have a number of experienced players who have played at senior level.
Athea have a blend of young and experienced players throughout and will be competitive if we can keep things tight at the back.
Good support as always is of great benefit to the team and let’s hope they give them something to cheer about.
