SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell were defeated by Kilmallock in the fourth group match of the County Championship. The Balbec asserted their dominance in the opening ten minutes as they raced into a 0-6 to 0-0 lead. The ‘Well crept back into the contest when Cian Lynch struck our first point and Aaron Gillane followed up with another point. Within a few minutes, Aaron Gillane hit the back of the net and reduced the deficit to a single point at 0-6 to 1-2. Kilmallock increased their tempo and claimed an unanswered goal and two points to cement a 1-8 to 1-2 advantage after twenty minutes. The closing stages of the first half were shaded by the ‘Well and the arrears were reduced to 1-10 to 1-6 before the interval.
Patrickswell needed a strong beginning to the second half; however Kilmallock fired over three consecutive points to generate a seven-point lead at 1-13 to 1-6. The teams traded four points apiece as Gary Kirby’s men battled to close the gap. At the midpoint of the second half, Kilmallock were 1-16 to 1-10 ahead. Patrickswell needed to find a higher gear, but our opponents killed off the challenge with three straight points to establish an unassailable 1-19 to 1-10 lead with five minutes left. The last few minutes were evenly balanced and the match ended with a 1-22 to 1-12 defeat. The weekend’s other results mean that Patrickswell have reached the quarter-final.
