MUNGRET ST PAUL’S GAA CLUB NOTES
KELLOGGS CUL CAMP
We are delighted to host the Kelloggs cul camp again this year and
have around 300 children taking part during the week. It is great to
see all the children having fun with the coaches while learning new
skills.
U-16 HURLING
Mungret St. Pauls 3-17 Patrickswell 0-10
In Mungret on Monday 12 August 2019 our U-16 hurlers played a great
game, while it looked like the game was a very one sided affair,
Patrickswell gave a great game and made our players work for every
score.
Patrickswell opened the game with a pointed free, Mungret St. Pauls
very quickly moved onto the scoreboard and did not stop until they had
5 points up. Both sides pointed again before there was a rush of red
making a run from the half way line, eyes directed infront and only
one thing on his mind, while the coaches were shouting to pass the
ball on, the shot was struck and straight to the back of the
Patrickswell net before the goalie realised what had happened. Both
sides welcomed 2 pointed placed balls each and one form play but
Mungret St. Pauls closed out the half with an additional 2 points and
a goal from a short range free, going in 2-11 to 0-5.
The second half matched the first 30 minutes, Patrickswell pointing
first and Mungret St. Pauls following it up with 3 points before
Patrickswell stopped them to score their own point from a free. While
the ball was near our goals Patrickswell tried to get the ball over
the line but the defense were not letting anything past them so had to
accept another point. Mungret St. Pauls took 5 chances on scoring only
making 2 of them count. Patrickwells pointed one out of 2 attempts.
Mungret St. Pauls saw their chance again and rattled the net for the
third time, another 2 pointed placed balled ended the game with
Mungret St. Pauls deserving winners.
This Mungret St. Pauls team remain unbeaten in the table with 2 more
games to go, the next is in 2 weeks time against Knockainey in
Knockainey.
U-14 CAMOGIE
Mungret St. Pauls 1-2 Newcastle West 8-8
Mungret St. Pauls knew this was going to be a tough match going into
it at home on Tuesday 13 August 2019, but the girls represented
themselves very well and kept battling throughout the game. They did
not manage to break the Newcastle West defense in the first half but
had a promising start in the second scoring the first point in the
restart, they shortly followed it up with a superb goal and took
another point near the end of the game, but Newcastle West had already
done the damage on the score board in the first half. There was some
great play from our girls who were just outclassed on the night.
BORD GAIS ENERGY
Well done to Ruairí Dwane who was luck enough to be selected to take
part in the Bord Gáis Energy GAA #HurlingToTheCore training session
which is took place in Pearse Stadium, Galway on Tuesday 13 August
2019. The children selected to take part got to train alongside Bord
Gáis Energy GAA Senior and U-20 hurling ambassadors, Galways- Joe
Canning, Lorraine Ryan, Niamh Kilkenny, Tipperarys- Brendan Maher and
Corks- Brian Turnbull, Ger Cunningham and Kevin Murry. Each child got
brought through six different skills sessions with the ambassadors
then took part in a challenge match at the end.
MINOR B FOOTBALL
Mungret St. Pauls 2-10 St. Senan’s 3-11
On Thursday 15 August in Askeaton our second Minor Football team took
on St. Senan’s in the Minor B Championship Semi Final, the last time
these two sides met Mungret St. Pauls only scored 3 points to St.
Senans 2-10. Mungret St. Pauls team on the night were very young as
the minor hurlers were kept busy with matches so the team was made up
of mainly U-16 players who gave a great account of themselves.
They started from behind but soon made up for it but by half time they
were still behind. The second half was their best play, after an
already impressive first half. Mungret St. Pauls really showed their
determination as they drew level with St. Senans and even went ahead
by 2 points only for St. Senans to come back to retain the lead. With
minutes left in the game, the two sides were level and it was anyones
game, as it turned out it was St. Senans, as a last minute goal and
point swung it for them to take them through to the final. Thank you
to our young players who stepped up on the night and to the players
who committed throughout the competition. Our players got a great
round of applause coming off the pitch.
PREMIER INTERMEDIATE HURLING
Mungret St. Pauls 1-20 Bruree 1-13
In the Bog Garden on Saturday 17 August the Limerick Motor Centre
Sponsored Premier Intermediate hurlers were prepared for this
important match, a win brings them closer to the Semi Final. Mungret
St. Pauls played into a strong breeze in the first half but leveled
the score at half time, the second half was their best half with some
impressive moves and scores they won the game well.
The first quarter of the game was slow scoring Mungret St. Pauls only
getting 3 points in while Bruree used the breeze and had a 2 point
lead over us. A free for Mungret St. Pauls saw them one point closer
and a chance on goal was sent over the bar to level the sides for the
second time. It went point for point for the next 6 scores leaving the
sides level again for the half time break.
Back out on the pitch, Bruree scored a point in the first minute but
Mungret St. Pauls shook the score board in the second minute by
slotting a ball neatly into the back of the net, this gave Mungret St.
Pauls a lead that they held onto for the rest of the game. A placed
ball for each side was followed on with 3 unanswered points for
Mungret St. Pauls the last point came from a Mungret St. Pauls puck
out which found its way to an unmarked player and straight over the
bar. Another placed ball point for Bruree and Mungret St. Pauls reply
was pointing 4 in a row. Needing goals Bruree were not giving up on
the game as they took an opportune shot on goal and netted it. Both
sides scored another 2 points a piece before the rain came, this did
not slow the game but it seemed to have ended Bruree scoring as
Mungret St. Pauls pointed the last 2 points finishing the game off
with a 7 point lead. Bruree may not have scored but they did not
refrain from going for goals at every opportunity, each one denied.
This was a result Mungret St. Pauls needed to keep them in semi final
position.
ROSE OF TRALEE
We are delighted to have one of our own footballers be one of two
Limerick escorts for the upcoming Rose of Tralee festival and we wish
him well. David Brosnan would like to give a massive thank you to Mike
