The Groody Gaels minor football team which defeated Murroe Boher in the county minor Ladies football championship on Sunday last

MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP: The Groody Gaels ladies minor team travelled to face Murroe Boher at Boher pitch on Sunday last October 20 in the first round of the county minor championship. Groody Gaels came out on top in a very entertaining encounter, winning the game on a final score-line of 4-6 to 3-8. In tough underfoot conditions, there was some excellent football and score taking on display from both sides.

Groody started the game the better of the two sides with a brilliantly taken early goal from full forward Saoirse Fitzgerald. Both teams then exchanged points with Ella Doyle and Emily O’Halloran on target for Groody Gaels before an expertly converted penalty from midfielder Rachel O’Dell gave her team a good lead heading towards half time. Murroe Boher rallied before half time with a number of goal scoring chances which were all brilliantly saved by Niamh Moloney in the Groody Gaels goal to leave the half time score 2-2 to 0-7 in favour of Groody Gaels.

Groody again started the second half well winning the throw in and driving forward before corner forward Ella Doyle scored her second point of the match to finish off an excellent team move. Murroe Boher then had a real purple patch scoring 3-1 without reply to take an eight point lead heading into the last quarter of the game.

All credit to Groody Gaels though who never let their heads drop and thanks to a relentless work rate by the entire team, were soon on the comeback trail.
The comeback started with an expertly taken goal from full forward Saoirse Fitzgerald followed two minutes later with a great point again from Saoirse to bring her tally for the day to 2-1.
Midfielder Rachel O’Dell then scored her second goal of the day with a brilliant long range effort into the roof of the net. Following a great run through the centre of the defence, centre back Jemma Duhig made it all square on the scoreboard with a great point.

Then heading into the last minute of the game, centre forward Emily O’Halloran sliced through the defence to score the winning point with a superb point from play to complete the come back and put Groody Gaels one point ahead. That’s how the game finished and congratulations to the entire Groody Gaels team on a brilliant come back and team performance.

Superb defensive performances from Nessa Kelly, Claire Kiely, Aoife Neville and Claire Flavin kept Groody Gaels in the game and brilliant link play going forward from Aoife Nelligan, Ciara Hodges and Aoibh Hayes set up the scoring opportunities for the team. Next up is a home match against Ballylanders in the Championship on the weekend of the 9th/10th November.

Groody Gaels Team: Niamh Moloney, Claire Kiely, Jemma Duhig, Nessa Kelly, Aoife Neville, Claire Flavin, Rachel O’Dell (Captain), Aoife Nelligan, Aoibh Hayes, Emily O’Halloran, Ciara Hodges, Saoirse Fitzgerald, Ella Doyle, Lauren O’Shaughnessey.
