County Football League Division 3

Fr. Caseys 2-10 Mungret 1-15

Fr. Caseys Junior Footballers took on Intermediate side Mungret last Friday evening in round 2 of the County League. Having lost to a strong Ballylanders side in round 1, Fr. Caseys were looking for better fortunes and made the perfect start with a goal in the opening five minutes. Clever play by Tommy Smith found Gerard Moloney close to goal and he in turn off-loaded to Tommy O’Connell who blazed the ball to the roof of the net. The joy was short lively as Mungret had the sides level within two minutes, breaching the Fr. Caseys defence to raise the green flag at the other end. In a very competitive first half the teams would trade points throughout, leaving the half time score 1-04 each. Mungret looked the more dominant force but the Fr. Caseys defence anchored by Seamus Lenihan and Gerard O’Connor had held their own. Up front Tommy Smith was causing plenty of havoc and new kid Eoin Murphy was also making a powerful debut. In midfield Tristan Harnett and Kieran Foley were working tirelessly against strong opposition.

Mungret started the brightest to the second half and raced into a four point lead after the third quarter. The superior fittest of the Mungret side meant Fr. Caseys had to dig deep to stay in touch but to their credit the team never threw in the towel and when the opportunity to level the score arose with five minutes remaining the Abbeyfeale men didn’t need a second invite. Winning a free on the 30 yard line Tommy Smith went short to Gerard Moloney on the edge of the square who held his nerve to rattle the Mungret net for a second time. With the teams level the game was in the melting pot but unfortunately it was Mungret who finished the strongest with two points in the closing

stages to escape with a 1-15 to 2-10 victory. A rusty display from Fr. Caseys but the effort cannot be faulted. Next weekend’s game with Athea will help dust off the cob webs further and with some additions to the panel this team is still on track for a championship assault in July.
