County Football League Division 4:

Fr. Caseys 0-12 Newcastle West 1-07

Fr. Caseys Junior A footballers host local rivals Newcastle West last Tuesday evening in round 6 of the County league. Both teams entered the game still in contention to win the Division 4 title so this was always going to be a competitive encounter. Fr. Caseys started the brightest and kicking two early points from Conor Horan and Packie O’Connor. Newcastle West the levelled proceedings but three unaswered points from Fiachra Cotter, Kieran Foley and Tristan Harnett had the fealsiders in a comfortable lead after 20 minutes. Fr. Caseys were looking the most dominant with Fiachra Cotter relishing his new role in midfield and Conor Horan and Thomas Sexton cause the Newcastle defence plenty of problems. A long ball into the Fr. Caseys box was not adequately cleared and Newcastle pounced on the broken ball to rattle the net and give themselves a lifeline. Fr. Caseys were not phased however and points from Conor Horan and Packie O’Connor before the break left Fr. Caseys in front by 0-07 to 1-02 at half time.

Despite being on the backfoot for much of the first half Newcastle emerged a more confident team after the break and kicked two early points to level the game. Fr. Caseys found their feet and four unanswered points from Tristan Harnett, Thomas Sexton and a brace of frees from Jamie O’Connor looked enough to get Fr. Caseys over the line with just over 10 minutes remaining. Newcastle West were not for lying down though and converted three frees to reduce the margin to a single point with less than 5 minutes remaining. Fr. Caseys needed to dig deep and that is exactly what they did. Some smart retention of the ball in the final quarter lead to a free which Jamie O’Connor converted to stretch the margin to two. Fr. Caseys defence held firm in the closing stages to claim the points in a hard fought encounter. The final score was Fr. Caseys 0-12, Newcastle West 1-07.

County Football League Division 4:

Fr. Caseys 0-13 Ballylanders 0-12

Fr. Caseys Junior A footballers made the long trip to Ballylanders last Saturday evening to take on the home side in a top of the table clash with the predicament that the winners would be crowned Division 4 champions. An early pointed free from Jamie O’Connor opened the scoring but Ballylanders soon levelled. Both teams continued to trade scores throughout the first half with neither team managing to build up a considerable lead. Fr. Caseys seemed the more dominant in terms of possession and had more scoring opportunities but unfortunately not all of these went over the bar. Tommy Sexton and Tommy O’Connell were the most clinical of our forwards, both bagging a brace of points in the opening half. Cathal Broderick and Thomas Cahill battled gamely in midfield while Tommy O’Keefe, Maurice O’Connor and Keith Harnett kept Ballylanders at a distance from the goalmouth at all times. Ballylanders who were more clinical with their limited chances were more than happy to head for the half time break with the teams tied on 8 points each.

Ballylanders resumed the second half by kicking two early points and although Fr. Caseys responded, with 15 minutes remaining Ballylanders were still two points in front and managing to pack their defence more and more. Fr. Caseys to their credit held their nerve and showed great maturity to retain possession, avoid the contact and slowly reduce the deficit. Trailing by 1 point with 5 minutes remaining up stepped Kieran Foley to score a wonderful point from 35 yards with the outside of his right boot. Now level, Tristan Harnett who had worked tirelessly all night was found in space 20 yards from goal and he made no mistake to raise the white flag and give Fr. Caseys the lead. Ballylanders came in search of an equalizer but Fr. Caseys stood strong to hold on and claim the division 4 league title. The final score was Fr. Caseys 0-13, Ballylanders 0-12

After winning the West and County junior league cups last month, this is the third title for our Juniors in the last 6 weeks and hopefully it won’t be the last. Next up is Cappagh in the West championship in a fortnight with the winner qualifying for the semi-finals and the loser potentially facing an exit from championship. Hopefully this team have another big display in them and this super run can continue.
