Caherline GAA Club Notes

GAA LOTTO: No winner, numbers drawn were 14, 15, 25, 29. Lucky dip winners were John Ryan, Michael Connors, Joan Lenihan, Sean Kiely & Tady Connolly. Next weeks jackpot will be €1,700 and the draw will be held on Friday night in Uncle Toms Bar.

COUNTY JUNIOR A HURLING: A strange game in Kilmallock on Thursday September 6th, in the sense that we played a team who, with the greatest of respect to them, didn’t look prepared for it. But, you can only play who’s in front of you and our lads took control of the game right from the throw-in and didn’t let go. James Enright opened the scoring for us with a goal in the 1st minute and 9 points followed before Ballybrown got their 1st point 24 minutes in. The 2nd half continued much as the 1st did, our 2nd goal coming from Gary Murphy 7 mins in, latching on to a lovely ball from Andrew Brennan from the left corner. Ballybrown managed 3 additional points in the 2nd half, but were not at the pace of the game at any point; there were no complaints when Johnny Murphy blew the final whistle with a few minutes left on the clock to see us take the win 2-18 to 0-04. The lads will know there’s still plenty to work on and will meet tougher opposition in the quarter finals, but that’s where we want to be! TEAM: M Moloney, D Power, P O’Keefe, S Whelan, D Casey, B Hourigan (0-01), A Power, G Murphy (1-02), K Wixted (0-03), W Hourigan (0-01), D Corbett (0-02), Js Enright (1-01), P Wixted (0-02), A Brennan (0-06 (3f)), E Nelligan. SUBS: D Crosse, Jk Enright, E Balfry, W O’Keefe, T O’Keefe, R Murnane.

MINOR HURLING: It can be tough sometimes to face off against amalgamated clubs, especially when there are two strong individual clubs involved, but those are the cards we were dealt for the game on September 4th in Kilteely. East Gaels are a strong outfit and were in control for most of the game. A goal early in each half showed their intent, but our boys fought until the final whistle & with a little bit more accuracy in certain areas of the field, things could have been a lot different. Final score, Caherline 0-10 East Gaels 2-18. We will play Pallasgreen in the East Minor B Hurling Championship Final, date & venue to be confirmed. TEAM: D Crosse, L O’Dea, E Balfry, D McNamara, D Murnane, S Whelan, N Tierney, J Enright, S Erasmus (0-02), J Kennedy (0-02), P Wixted (0-06), M O’Connor, J Halvey, C Enright, N O’Connor. SUBS: P Ryan, R Walsh, J Carroll, J Moloney, P Kolodziejczak.

U-16 HURLING: Our U-16’s were on the road early last Saturday morning, heading back to Ballingarry to play the table toppers. We knew this was going to be a tough game, Granagh-Ballingarry had only lost once in this competition way back in April. But our lads took to the field ready for the challenge and to their credit, got stuck in. The first half was a cagey enough affair, Caherline taking a slender lead in to half time. The pace picked up in the 2nd half and a goal from Conor Enright only a minute in put us 4 points up. A minute later, Matt Hogan pulled off a great save from a free close in, batting it over the bar. Granagh-Ballingarry were starting to push hard and 2 goals in the 8th & 13th minutes pushed them ahead by a point, Caherline putting over 2 points during that period. For the next 12 minutes or so, it was a battle for possession but no scores for either side, Granagh-Ballingarry getting more than their fair share of chances from some soft frees, but their wide count was well into double figures. A point from a Jake Kennedy free in the 25th minute to make it a draw was quickly followed by another goal from Conor Enright, a lovely ball he dropped in that was misjudged by the keeper. Jake added another point shortly after to give us a 4 point lead heading towards injury time. Granagh-Ballingarry added 2 more points in time added on, but it wasn’t enough to deny Caherline a well deserved win. Our lads are now guaranteed a semi final, we’ll share details as soon as we know who we’ll be playing & where. We’d also like to wish Conor McGrath a speedy recovery, he came off in the second half with a nasty leg injury. TEAM: M Hogan, S McAnulty, C McGrath, N Connaughton, A Kearns, D Murnane, J Carroll, J Kennedy (0-05(3f)), J Moloney (0-01), C Enright (2-01), M O’Connor, C Martin (0-01), H Murnane (0-01), J McElligott, M Vaughan.
