Intermediate Hurlers Bow Out of Championship:
On Sunday last September 17, Blackrock played Garryspillane in the County premier intermediate hurling championship in Kilbreedy going into the game, the locals needed a victory to remain in contention for a place in the semi final stages of the championship, with two wins and a draw from five outings, while Garryspillane were in a better position with four wins recorded from six outings. Both sides had reached the semi final stages last year when they both suffered defeat. In the recent years Garryspillane have proved to be a bogey team for Blackrock, scoring wins in the last two outings both played in Kilbreedy, and this was the case also in the latest instalment of their meeting in the championship, where Garryspillane took the spoils once again. It is said ‘Goals win Matches’, and this was certainly the case on Sunday last when Garryspillane scored three in the first half of the game to lead by 3.06 to 0.02 after 25 minutes of play, the Blackrock scores coming in the opening minutes from a Paudie Leahy free and Kevin Palmer from play, four late points from Paudie Leahy, 3 frees and a 65 saw the Rockies ten points in arrears at the interval 3.07 to 0.06. The second half was much more evenly contested with saw Blackrock on top in many sectors, adding 0.08, Dylan Dawson (2), Martin Farrell (2), James O’Doherty (1) and (3) from Paudie Leahy frees, while Garryspillane added 0.04 to their interval score, to run out winners by 3.11 to 0.14 and qualify for a place in the Co semi final. It was indeed a year mixed of fortunes for the Blackrock team who gave of their best on the field of play, all during the year, which brought its highs and lows some off the field for the team and club in general, Best of luck to Murroe Boher, Garryspillane, Feohanagh and Pallasgreen who are now in the semi finals.
